Why boats sink at the dock

In another post I listed Boat/US reasons for boats sinking underway.

The top reasons for boats sinking at the dock a

Where the Water Came From
:
Reason Percentage
Underwater Fittings: 50%
Rain and Snow: 32%
Fittings Above the Waterline: 9%
Poor Docking Arrangements: 8%
Other: 1%

Underwater fittings include : "In 50% of the dockside sinking claims, water
found its way into the bilge through leaks at underwater fittings. The
majority of the leaks were at stuffing boxes (12), followed by outdrive or
shift bellows (11), failed hoses or hose clamps (eight), sea strainers
(four), and drain plugs (four).

There were two sinkings each from air conditioning fittings, gate valves,
transducers, mounting bolts, and mufflers. One boat went to the bottom as a
result of a leaking speedometer impeller. It is certainly possible that more
than one fitting had been leaking. "

An interesting note concerning claims due to rainwater/snow was:

"Water falling from the sky, either rain, snow, or sleet, accounted for a
whopping 32% of the sinking claims. Everybody has seen a rowboat or two
awash, so this shouldn't be a surprise. What may be startling is that all of
the claims involved boats with self-bailing cockpits that should have shed
the water overboard."

No surprise there. The self-bailing design is only intended to clear the
partially enclosed cockpit from wash over the gunnels or transom. Many or
most of the engine compartment and/or bilge-access hatches are either not
waterproof, or develop leaks over time. Sitting unattended for two or three
months of winter rains is more than enough for any slow leak to claim it's
victim.

Jack,

The problem I have seen is the scuppers get clogged with leaves or trash and
the water then floods into the engine compartment or bilge.

****

Precisely.

My boat may yet be sunk by a maple tree, 30 feet from the water.
There's a big maple tree
near my slip. In autumn, the leaves blow in behind the bulwarks and
tend to collect atop the scuppers. I check the boat every couple of
days when I'm not actively using it, and I have arrived to find a *lot*
of water accumulated on deck after one of the fall monsoons moves
through.

Ah yes, the Seattle dilema: Covered moorage inside the locks (adding up
to six hours combined waiting time on a busy summer weekend), or open
moorage outside. :-)

Paul Schilter April 13th 05 08:54 PM

Harry,
And make sure birds can't perch under it either. :-)
I lived on Lake St. Clair for a time, I had a seawall with 7 feet of
water there. My neighbor to the left of me had a covered boat lift, but
it was cut into the land on one side, his property line was about 25
feet more into the lake. One day I was talking with my neighbor to the
right, I was admiring our neighbor's boat hoist and inquired what he
thought it might cost. He replied about $15K, (it was a while ago), I
told him I didn't think that was too bad. He said "Yeah, I had one just
like it till one spring the ice flows took it away. Then he told me that
they're not insurable for ice damage. Sure changed any plans I was
thinking about.

You're an idiot Krause.

First, what is the $1000 for? Are you suggesting that I would give that to

boat for that weekend, and make up some fake documents.

And that's just the type of person you are too, it's easy to tell. You
fabricate here, you will fabricate there. You have tried to pass other boats
off as your own in the past. You are pathetic.

Second, I wouldn't meet you if you paid me. Liars are the social scum of
people, and you are a repeated proven liar. I don't associates myself with
people of such low caliber. You are a duff.

Third, I find it interesting you make a proposition to me, after you ignored
my simple propositions to you. So simple in fact, all you had to do was
explain yourself, but you refused. Proving you are a coward as well.

Fourth, you incessant need to prove to me you have a boat, and for me to

this group, your reputation as a fabricator has dissolved any credibility
you ever had. You are a proven liar.

This is a nice theory on your part, dipstick, but it isn't even close.

My using the "no archive" bit began shortly after I became involved a
little in the Mozilla project, when some programmers in a private
discussion group started outlining the various features they were adding
to make what was to become a "new" Netscape and beyond a more interesting
program. Back then, there was discussion of adding additional entries to
the "ADDRESS" box, and one of these was an X-no-Archive. Back then, using
that "feature" was part automatic and part manual, the explanation of
which I won't get into here. Today, if you know how to modify a user
script, it can be automatic. In any event, it was one of many new and at
that time experimental features of Mozilla that I played with.

I keep it invoked these days because it always seems to get a rise out of
the right-wing trash, people like you, who spend your time plumbing the
depths of dejanews or whatever, to see what bit of nonsense from the past
you can dredge up and use against people. It annoys dregs of society like
you because some of my stuff is and some of my stuff is not autoarchived.
Tough, eh? It does add a bit of flavor to my ability to annoy right-wing
trash.

Another new feature is time posting. I used to do that a little, too. As
in, insert a Time Stamp he Friday, April 15, 2005, 9:59:39 AM

As for how many posts I've entered here, I haven't a clue, but since you

does know, eh? I mean, how many of the posts attributed to me really are
from me? How many are from you and other other right-wing garbage who
either want to be me or who want to try to create problems for me?

By the way, do you have a real identity?

Right now, my boat's awaiting its turn for unwrapping, prep and launch at
the largest marina in the Deale, Maryland, area. The boat has dark
hullsides, a light-colored house and a small flying bridge. It's the only
boat that looks it right now in that immediate area, and the type of boat
it is is incorporated into its name on the stern, which is mostly
unwrapped.

Email me specifics (Name, address, telephone number, auto and auto
license plate number) and I'll verify them and forward to you the location
of the entrance to the yard. Once you arrive, my designee will collect the
cash from you (no checks), give you 60 seconds to look over the papers,
and take you to the boat. You'll have 60 seconds to walk around it until
you are escorted out of the yard. Better hurry, though. She'll set to be
splashed any day now and then run down to Solomons Island.

Go for it, buttwiper...or put on two pairs of rubber gloves and forever
hold your piece.

As for a spin on your boat, I'll pass.

Harry,

Since I do not post OT political trolls, but only highlight your
foolishness when you make OT trolls, how can I be here to disrupt the
NG. You have already carried that thread into the gutter before I
respond. You are just upset because all of my posts directed towards you
are true and factually correct.

You're never going to make a dollar "interpreting" my thoughts or
feelings, bozo.

I think you're a horse's ass. In most of your posts, you're simply
playing people. You've also posted here with literally dozens of
different IDs in order to see how much of a mess you could make in here.
You're just another heavy-breathing drooler, just like Hertvik, Fritz,
Robbins, Netsock, et al. The only difference between you and Tuuk is that
your language skills are a little better.

You ought to read carefully the responses to "Why do boats sink." When
you get a boat, you'll be able to avoid the problem.

Harry,

You do understand the bet.

If you do not provide proof that this is your boat, you will owe me

$10,000.
If you agree, I will have my agent, JimH come down your way to pick up my
money.

Right, right...would that be the Zimmerman, or the Donzi?

LOL! Some strangers boat, with the papers Krause fabricated, and him not
even present.

What an idiot...

Better hurry, though. She'll set to be
splashed any day now and then run down to Solomons Island.

Right, right. Can I do it next week? I'm going up on the next space shuttle,
and will be tied up in the space station all summer. ;)

What a maroon... [huge grin]

Do you think that's wise? JimH has proven time and again that he's
unreliable and either a 'natural born liar' or he has some condition
that causes him to lose touch with reality. So you can pity or despise
him....just don't let him hold your money.(IMHO)

You made an offer, you did not propose a bet.
I accepted your offer.

This is what you offered:

"I also will pay $10,000 just to see your Lobster Boat and documents."

My terms in response to your offer were thusly stated:

"Email me specifics (Name, address, telephone number, auto and auto
license plate number) and I'll verify them and forward to you the location
of the entrance to the yard. Once you arrive, my designee will collect the
cash from you (no checks), give you 60 seconds to look over the papers,

You did not mention a "bet" in your original offer, which I accepted on a
reasonable basis. *Now* you want to make your offer a bet?

Foch off.

Your mouth is making promises your wallet cannot keep.

And you want your alter ego, Hertvik, involved?

Double foch off.

Go play with your boy Tuuk.

The real ME April 15th 05 05:30 PM

Harry,

It is good to see you are not dumb enough to accept a bet that you own a
Lobster Boat, your wife would be ****ed if you lost $10,000. I dangled the
bait concerning $10,000 because I knew if you thought you had nothing to
lose, you would jump on it. As soon as you realized you had to prove proof
of ownership, you jumped shipped.

It is so funny to watch you backpeddle.

PS - I am willing to accept a $10,000 bet that you wife does not have a MD
and PHD degree. PS - the Maryland AMA does not have your wife listed as a
member.

Here is an easy way to make $20,000, but of course you can not accept the
bet, because you would lose the bet.

The only difference between you and Basskisser is at he is smart enough to
know when looks like a fool.

Milquetoast Donny is upset since I reminded him last night that he needs to
get his head out of Krause's ass every so often.

Krause and Donny. They deserve each other.

Exactly. Ten grand is probably about half his yearly salary too. Im sure he
has never even seen that much money, let alone, be able to get a hold of it.

It is so funny to watch you backpeddle.

Yeah, but it does get old. Especially since he is not bright enough to see
how ridiculous he really is.

PS - I am willing to accept a $10,000 bet that you wife does not have a MD
