How many people have a formal annual boat inspection and what do you include
in your inspection?

The problem below shows what can happen when you ignore basic maintainance.



"Steering Cables"
A policeman on routine patrol in the Texas Gulf was tossed out of his boat
when the steering cable broke suddenly and the boat spun out of control. He
was wearing a PFD, fortunately, but the boat circled back and the prop put a
terrible gash in his leg. He was picked up a few minutes later by another
police officer and eventually recovered. The example is telling because the
police officer had no idea the seven-year-old cable was deteriorated or even
that it could deteriorate.

Even with an inspection it is very difficult to tell if a steering cable is
about to break. Maybe from stretch if that has happened but since the cable
itself is inside a sleeve you may or may not ever know.
If you have dual cable steering then you would know if one was broke by
checking each cable seperate.

Real question is why was he not wearing a kill switch. Any boat that you
could get thrown out of should have a kill switch.

My inspection ... when that big pile of snow out in the laneway finally
melts, I will go and check that the boat is still there.

why was he not wearing a kill switch

They work great if you spend the day at the helm....

That why all my marinas check steering cables, on every boat, no
exceptions.
