Dave is in a self-imposed persistive vegetative condition. You will never
improve his condition no matter how hard you try. He cannot learn. His mind,
what there is of it, is closed tight to ward off anything that might wake him.
He's a frightened little toad. Find someone who is worth engaging. Dave ain't
it. Pull the plug and let him go.
