Default What type of stern does this vessel have?

I've got an old and a new photo of the vessel.
http://klightspeed.customer.netspace.net.au/nellie-wellers.jpg
http://klightspeed.customer.netspace.net.au/nellie-peddells.jpg

We've found some records on it from 1898-1907, indicating a Nellie
which has an elliptical stern and a raking bow. I don't know a lot
about boats, and I'm wondering whether anyone could confirm or deny
that the described vessel and the photographed vessel could be one
and the same.

Thankyou.

For my money, it's not the same vessel.

Don't think so. The old B&W photo of the beached boat shows a counter
stern with a transom, as far as I can tell. The profile view doesn't
really show enough, but an elliptical stern would not show that corner
at gunwhale.

Maybe... the newer photo doesn't show enough of the hull, nor anything
to give it's scale. It does have a plumb bow, low freeboard, and
approximately the right quarter buttocks angle. I wouldn't make a bet
either way.

I've moved the photos to
http://klightspeed.customer.netspace.net.au/nellie, and added two photos.
There are now 2 old photos (one floating, one on a sandbank), 1 photo of
her on a sandbank in about 1995 or 1996, and one photo of her from about
2000.
The old photos are from around the 1950s or 1960s.

Thankyou.
Ben.

With the cabin extended on the newest photo, the lines are a little
different - they are certainly the same type of vessel, that's for
sure. I could buy these two as the same vessel

http://klightspeed.customer.netspace...s-floating.jpg
http://klightspeed.customer.netspace...s-sandbank.jpg

and these two being the same vessel

http://klightspeed.customer.netspace...s-floating.jpg
http://klightspeed.customer.netspace...s-sandbank.jpg

but they are two different vessels.

If any of that makes sense.

The windows were changed between the 1950/60s photos and the 1992/93
photo. A dog box was added between then and the 1995/96 photo. The deck
was re-laid between then and the 2000 photo.

John and Margaret Bertelson put in the portholes just before sale in 1971.
We added the "NELLIE" sign on the side in 1991 when we got her.
We added the dog box was added in 1994.
The deck was relaid, the back seats replaced, and the vertical slats on
the cabin removed between 1996 and 1998, when we were on the slip for 2
years.

The profile shows some distinct similarities: the plumb stem and fantail
stern. However, if you look closely at the sterns, you will see that the
Wellers has much more freeboard in the stern and the shape is different from
what we can see in the Peddells.

IMHO, what you have is two different boats of the same era of similar style.

Nice to see an old boat that has servived.

Ok, so if you have provenance on the vessel, why are you asking?

The stern is similar to the one depicted in
http://www.danderby.com/fantail_window.jpg, except that the rear is
square, as seen in
http://klightspeed.customer.netspace.net.au/nellie/peddells-greenslopes.jpg
In 1991, she was in poor shape, and so the stern was lower. Also note that
the more weight she has in the front, the higher the stern. We had a fair
amount of stuff under the cockpit in 2000, and the fore tank may have been
approaching empty when the photo was taken.
Also, a fair amount of work was done to the hull in 1994.

I was wondering whether anyone could confirm that she has an elliptical
stern. "Steve" says that she appears to have a fantail stern, which
according to the second hit on
www.google.com/search?q=fantail+elliptical+stern
was also called an elliptical stern.

Thankyou.
Ben.
