Default ENGINE COMPATABILITY

All,

I have an '88 Bayliner Capri with a 5 liter (305ci) OMC I.O.. The engine is
dead and I would like to replace it with GM 350 crate engine,

Is the 305 block compatible with the 350 crate engine, as far as bolt on
components, heads etc?

305 and 350 are the same block. Just different bore and stroke. Heads may or
may not be interchangeable. Don't know for sure but I wouldn't try it without
checking further than this newsgroup. May get a strange compression ratio.

You may find a difference in the crankshafts. Marine engines have heavy
duty cranks, main bearings oil pump and oil pan. This is because marine
engines are under constant load pushing a prop, whereas auto engines
have much less strain on them as the transmission takes strain off as it
shifts. There are a few differences in the heads too. Especially in the
emission systems. You may be better off if you order a rebuilt from a
reputable company.

I have seen a standard, automotive 350 in a boat before, and it did work
for a while. But, burned out in 2 seasons.
