I've already bought my Contender anyway.

I was shocked at the price. $240k boat show special. Sea Vee makes a 31'
with a forward cuddy and a single diesel for around $140k. And a Whaler has
very little if anything in build quality over a Sea Vee.

The latest boating magazine has a Grady White 36' on its cover. Triple
outboards. Just under $390k. Eeeeek! If you don't mind me asking, what'd
that Contender cost, and with what power?

225 E-TECS (for two) at $31K, boat, T-top, enclosure, electronics -
$162K total. I kept the trailer from the old boat.

That's not bad. I hear the new 290 Edgewater Pilot console is selling for
that.

What is the oil burn rate on those E-tecs? Is it 50:1 or 100:1? The oil is
pretty expensive, isn't it?

I honestly don't know about the oiling rate. I believe it's metered as
you run - what the average is I don't know.

About $40 per gallon but I understand that a gallon of the stuff lasts
at about two/thee times the normal rate - maybe more than that. I
don't have all the specs yet - hell, the engines haven't been
delivered yet. The boat should arrive in a couple of weeks.

I'm looking forward to it.

Bombardier says that the first scheduled service isn't for 300 hours.
Assuming a "normal" fuel/oil burn rate is 50:1 on a conventional 2-stroke,
then the E-tec's burn at 150:1. If that's the case, in the first 300 hours
of operation, burning 12 gph, you'll go through 3600 gallons of fuel and 24
gallons of oil. At $40/gallon, that's $960.

For 4-strokes, a dealership charges about $160 for an oil change (includes
lower gear oil and filter), and recommends it every 100 hours. The 4-stroke
manufacturers recommend changing the water pump impeller at 200 hours (some
dealers say 100 hours..especially if you operate in a lot of shallow water).
They also recommend inspecting the valve clearance and adjusting if
necessary...at an additional charge no doubt. Assuming that the valves
don't need adjusting, the 4-stroke will cost a couple of hundred dollars
less to run/maintain in the first 300 hours.

What I find confusing about the E-tecs is this: how does the lower gear oil
and the water pump impeller last 300 hours on an E-tec, but only 100-200
hours on a four-stroke? There should be virtually no difference between the
engines for those parts.

True. But at 50:1 on a conventional FICHT with 3600 gallons that's 72
gallons of oil FICHT (I think that's right) @ $16 per gallon (bulk)
that's around $1200. If you pay retail price for FICHT oil it's
closer to (@ $23 per gallon) $1650.

I dunno - I can find out though.
