Default Marine speakers?

Folks,
I'm looking for opinions on a mid -- low end marine speaker. I'm looking
for something like a pair of 6 inchers, or mebbe 6x9's. Anyone have any
opinions/experience with a marine grade speaker for no more than 100
bucks/pair...?

Pioneer makes great marine speakers and I have only seen one model offered. I
bought them after hearing them on my friend's boat. His were installed for
three years and the hose had hit them dozens of times. I always thought of
Pioneer as a mid-range car audio company but these speakers are well worth it.
The Bose equivalents don't compare in sound quality, cost more, and require a
large space in the rear for their "box" design.

I've got a pair of the cheapest West Marine 6' speakers on the
flybridge. I'm amazed how good they sound.

$30 a pair.

I agree. No need for "marine grade". Normally that label means a higher
price and lower quality.

The most important features to consider a 1. Poly surrounds...no foam.
2. The power handling, sensitivity (85db to 95db at 1 watt RMS are most
common) ratings.

Most speakers are mounted vertically. Some are mounted horizontally under
radar arches, thus providing a UV and moisture barrier. Covers also provide
some protection, so rain will not be a major concern.

Some speakers will sound remarkably better when provided with a woven
fiberglass insulation backing packed tightly behind the speaker (such as in
a radar arch installation).

The first thing I look for is magnetic shielding. The only speakers
that seem to have it are computer speakers. So I would say to either
use shielded computer speakers, or make your own shielded boxes for
the speakers.

I'm sure you can get any Marine to speak to you.

Unless, of course, you are some kind of weirdo. :)
