Exactly, it was a dumb joke, and not worthy of any real attention.
Similarly, when Trent Lott made his equally innocuous remarks about
Strom Thurmond, it should have been no big deal either. But every
liberal latched on to those comments and spun them as if he made a
racial slur of biblical proportions.

The double standard is glaringly apparent.
