heavy socks offer better insulation but they take up room inside boots and
shoes making them too tight and cutting off circulation. I wear two pair
of socks in winter, thick inner wool and thin outer synthetic
to protect the wool. Synthetic fibres have better abraision resistance
than natural fibres. I also buy winter boots a size too large for my feet
to accomodate heavy socks. In my grandfather's day they wore horsehair
booties under their snowshoe moccasins. Around camp they wore deerskin
"sock savers". I sometimes wear snowshoe moccasins around the house in
winter with felt innersoles, also outside when the streets have not yet been
salted after a good snow. Like walking on air.

I also have some socks with a fleece-like texture inisde which traps warm air
and keeps the feet warmer. Theyn work fine. They would not be as good as
wool if wet as wool stays warm when wet.

Hi,

Won't be getting wet; just every day type use.

Outdoor walking around, etc.

Thanks for help,
Bob

Are these for paddling? Will his/her feet be getting wet?

Hello:

Have a friend who has some circulation type
problems, and always experiences cold feet, particularly in the
winter months. Lives in New England.

Would like to buy them a present of the absolute warmest socks there are.

Don't know anything about this subject, but thought that this might be a
good forum to ask in.

What do I want:

- all wool ?

- the "thermal" type of heard about (whatever that is) ?

- or ?

Any suggestions on brand(s), and also importantly type, would be most
appreciated.

Much thanks,
B.
