Here in Rochester, my local ramp was open the weekend before last, and there were probably 75 boats anchored, fishing for perch. The docks had been removed, but with two people, launching wasn't a problem. But, I saw something I'd never seen before at this location: There were two CG guys walking back and forth constantly between the jetty which protects the channel into Lake Ontario, the the launch site, which is directly adjacent. At first, I thought they were checking safety equipment, or doing the DEC a favor and looking at fishing licenses. But, they didn't pause long enough to check equipment as each boat came in. Then it dawned on me: It was a gorgeous day and the lake was flat as glass. It would've been a breeze to bring a small boat across from Canada. I think we can expect all sorts of strange stuff for quite some time. |

I was up at Lake Champlain this summer and there were a ton of Canadian boats in and around the place we were staying at. Of course, I was about an hour south of the border, but hey.. :) Later, Tom S. Woodstock, CT ---------- "We may say of angling as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries: Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did and so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling." Of course, this is the fundamental problem with your border security: it's keeping honest folks like Don and I (who might spend money down there!) out, but is doing nothing to counter terrorism. If a person has the proper identification, there is no problems boating across the borders between Canada and the USA. I enjoy visiting my American friends and border security is no problem for those who have a Nexus Card. Jim Carter "The Boat" Bayfield, Ontario, Canada. |

Do you suppose the terrorists just get in line at the border crossings? Our border with Canada is too long to partrol, and much of it is mountainous wilderness. It isn't like trying to defend the perimeter of Vatican City. Heck, I could sneak into Canada. And back. Think what a terrorist with just a minimum amount of training could do? You want to enter the US from Canada? Come by pleasure boat during the busy summer cruise season and put up a courtesy flag. It would take US Customs days, if ever, to figure out you hadn't cleared customs. Stay out of the resort marinas and odds are good you would *never* be questioned. As it is, only a small percentage of boats are actually inspected when they do report to customs. A guy could have a dozen terrorist criminal *******s concealed in a medium size boat and have a 60-80 percent chance of getting through untouched. Terrorist criminal *******s will take the easiest opportunity to get into the US. It's like basketball. You double or triple team the guy you think is most likely to score against you, and that only takes the pressure off somebody else instead. |

What? Even your 'Brown Pelicans' are trying to get away from your
repressive regime. One landed here and a local vet is taking care of it until we ship it back to Miami. Darn shame......bird has more sense than a lot of 'good 'ole boys'. NOYB wrote in message news:uwfKb.26265 I'm glad the CG is there to keep the likes of Don and Lloyd out of our country. |
