The lunatics in the Bush Administration have gone right over the edge
Washington -- Amid heightened indications that al Qaeda operatives may be planning catastrophic attacks in the United States, the FBI is warning police about a new potential tool for terrorism: almanacs. An FBI intelligence bulletin sent to law enforcement agencies last week warned that "terrorist operatives may rely on almanacs to assist with target selection and pre-operational planning" because they include detailed information on bridges, tunnels and other U.S. landmarks, officials said. Although noting that "the use of almanacs or maps may be the product of legitimate recreational or commercial activities," the bulletin urged police to watch for suspects carrying almanacs, especially if the books include suspicious notations or marks, because "the practice of researching potential targets is consistent with known methods of al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations." The warning came as a surprise to purveyors of almanacs, which range from statistical tomes listing the tallest buildings and the longest bridges to folksy journals including planetary charts and apple pie recipes. "Our almanac is about as far away as you can get from terrorism and about as close as you can get to what you would think of as Americana," said Peter Geiger, editor of the Farmers' Almanac, a 185-year-old compendium of weather predictions, cleaning tips and other advice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I plan to carry an almanac with me from now on... And I'm going to underline all sorts of passages. -- Email sent to is never read. |

I dunno, Harry. If I were a cop and I already had an odd feeling about
someone, every possible additional clue might be useful. |

Remember all those stories about how the Godless commie government in Russia was such a police state that it was considered suspicious to have a map, travelers needed government permission to move around, and anyone who questioned the government was by definition a traitor or a threat to the security of the state. Who would have thought that we would so quickly embrace their police state after so many years of anti Soviet propaganda? Welcome to the US the US the USSR ... Rick |

You take quite a leap going from Harry's bull**** to a police state. I'll assume that you share political positions with Harry (I hesitate to call them political "beliefs" as I don't think he really believes in them). And from there I would guess that you are not really concerned about the existance of a police state, but rather you hate that "your side" isn't running it at the moment. |

If you've read any of Rick's responses you'd probably not be so quick to judge him a partisan. Seems like his opinions are pretty well founded and reasonably earned. I offered an assumption - my words were "I'll assume..." I have not claimed to know any *facts* about Rick. And at the moment, I see *one* response from Rick in this thread. If you are suggesting that I should be reading all of the political crap in this newsgroup prior to making assumptions - no thanks. I admit to being embarrased for even looking at a fraction of it. Of course I have opinions about you. They come from reading some of the crap. And *you* are, in *fact*, a significant contributor to the off-topic **** pile that has made this newsgroup less valuable to me and a lot of others. |
