The first is our younger son John manning the rail as the USS Harry S Truman got underway from Norfolk Oct 13th for a six month deployment. John is a newlywed and his bride was one of the hundreds on the pier seeing the ship off. (Note the shiny new wedding band) I think the picture says it all. The second is an impressive shot of the Carrier in transit. The pics may be viewed at: http://tinyurl.com/4uujj Eisboch That's nothin'. I have two of those boats, "Lobsta 1" and Lobsta 2". I just don't use 'em that much. :-) Just kidding! Nice pics! On the ship itself, is it Harry S Truman or Harry S. Truman? The first is correct, the second is not. The first is correct. I read a biography on Truman and he never used a period after "S". Eisboch |

One of those items that stick with you the rest of your life. As to manning the rail. Friend was an enlisted man on a carrier in the 50's. He said a great incentive to not be a sailor, but to be an officer was the show the enlisted had to put on by standing on the deck as you arrived in port. And arriving in San Francisco caused you to almost freeze to death. |

He signs his name with quotation marks around the D to draw attention to the fact that it is just a letter. |

My new daughter-in-law sent me an official USS Harry S Truman ballcap purchased at the Navy base in Norfolk. It is stitched or embroidered (whatever it is they do) with "USS Harry S. Truman" CVN 75. I'll get some waterproof blue ink and blot out the period, I think. The cap is now part of my collection of about a zillion various ballcaps and half a zillion well worn boat shoes that I just can't bring myself to throw away. They all work well with the wardrobe of the recently retired, including pants that are buckled 3/4 of the way up my chest and held in place with one of a quarter zillion belts that have pictures of little fish on them. At least I don't wear ties anymore. Eisboch |

Eisboch Eisboch, You seem like a very smart guy with lots to contribute to the group...I enjoy reading your boating related threads. However, you seem to veer off topic regularly, and end up feeding the worst OT trolls here. Why is that? Would you consider staying on-topic here? Thanks, and let us know. -- -Netsock "It's just about going fast...that's all..." http://home.columbus.rr.com/ckg/ |

I suppose it's just human nature, particularly when the fundamental topic is of importance and I have a viewpoint, right or wrong, to offer. I feel badly though, that the OT stuff usually develops into a contest of insults and general bull****. I try hard to stay out of that, but not always with 100% success. I agree, boating topics on a boating newsgroup is much better. Occasional off topic discussion among reasonable people to share ideas and viewpoints is ok with me also, but not the bulk of the junk we see posted here day in and day out. Eisboch |
