Default replacing lower end gear lube

I have the 900 mercury year 85.
I have yet to replace the lower end gear lube.
my question is how much should I buy for this job?
I have the manual but there is no capacities section
and the only instruction is to fill the case and then allow
1 ounce to dribble out for expansion, and reseal the plugs.

your gearcase will take about a litre. make sure to change the fill
and level screw washers also, taking care to remove all of the old
washers.
