Ok. The wife and I have decided to sell our other home and buy/build a
place "around" the chesapeake. Problem is, I know NOTHING about the chesapeake....never even been there. I'm picking it because it's close, yet far enough away to feel like we are "away". The ideal situation would be ground that I could purchase and maybe setup my 35' 5th wheel on until I built, but I'm not going to go through all that if I can get a good deal on a house down there. I do NOT have to be "on the water" but close enough to a dock/slip where I could keep my boat. I like the area between the bay and delaware...I guess the "east" side most...that way, we'd be close to the beach as well.... Anybody have any good suggestions to look? We are planning to take a ride to that area and just drive around for 2 days and scope things out. I'd like a place off the beaten path...small town close by, no telephone or internet service either:-) I'm looking at the area of Nanticoke river and north....Thoughts? Help? Websites? Is there a GOOD boating map of the chesapeake I can download somewhere? I'm going to need some boating help as well....but that will come after I buy one worthy of the mighty chesapeake:-) Right now I just have 3 jet boats and a tritoon pontoon that I'll be selling. Thanks Don |

If you don't dig Murrilyn's state tax scene, then there's the Virginia portion, which revolves around the Norfolk/Hampton/Newport News "Tidewater". And as I understand it, Delaware's taxes are lowest of all, although Delaware has it's own dang bay...but it's just a hop through the C&D canal if you MUST float on the Chesapeake. I think you'll need more than two days to scope out the DelMarVa Peninsula. -The ideal situation would be ground that I could purchase and maybe setup my 35' 5th wheel on until I built, but I'm not going to go through all that if I can get a good deal on a house down there. Since I've no clue where you live now, I can't tell you what would be a "good deal" for you. I know that I'm agog at the reasonableness of realty down here in Hampton Roads,(I live in metro DC). If you really feel adventurous, sell your boats and buy a houseboat...tour the place the way the colonists did...and in a craft not much smaller, for that matter. This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for....options. I never even considered the delaware bay area. I think you'll need more than two days to scope out the DelMarVa Peninsula. Well, I meant 2 days at a time. I'll be putting our other house on the market right around Feb. It's a 2 story, 1600sq ft right on the susquehanna....they've been going quickly around here for 130k. I should be able to squeeze that a little harder since I'm on 2 acres with a private concrete ramp/dock and a 2 story shop complete with elevator across the drive. -The ideal situation would be ground that I could purchase and maybe setup my 35' 5th wheel on until I built, but I'm not going to go through all that if I can get a good deal on a house down there. Harrisburg, PA. I don't want to contact realtors until I know where the hell I want to go!!! If you really feel adventurous, sell your boats and buy a houseboat...tour the place the way the colonists did...and in a craft not much smaller, for that matter. That would be a little too adventurous for me at this point. I need to LEARN a lot before a task such as that. I have a lot of river experience and know about 16 miles of it like the back of my hand but I'd feel REAL uncomfortable for the first 2 years out on the delaware/chesapeake bay!! I need to find a person where we decide to buy that will take me under their "oar" so to speak:-) Great suggestions...thanks for your time. Don |

-Great suggestions...thanks for your time.- Bilge-Time, I have plenty of. I'm sitting on a ship moored at Newport News. SS-DD, y'know? Good luck on the house hunt. I wouldn't overlook the Atlantic coast of the DelMarVa, either, Ocean City MD is fun in the summer, and there's lots of sounds, bays and rivers you can fart about in your boat exploring. Berlin,Maryland is a nice little town, and close to OC's restaurants galore. Salisbury MD is the year-round big town on that end, and I s'pose it's okay, if you don't mind the smell of the Perdue poultry plant in August...clears the sinuses, good fer what ails ya. I took the family on a weekender over the ChesBay Bridge Tunnel...far out. Within 15 minutes you go from sleepy backwater farm country to urban Norfolk/Virginia Beach. And...I must pass this along for my deck colleagues...us heavies are in a dredged channel all the way up and down the bay...vessel under power constrained by draft, and all that Rules of the Road they chant at each other....give us a break and keep clear of us in the channel, otherwise we all have to lurn the "Tonnage Law of Navigation". Who needs that? Regards; Mutiny is a Management Tool Select Your Tattoo while Sober |

My favorite is when you see a 21' day sailer crossing the path of an 800' container ship that is headed up the bay to Baltimore. Who has the right away all of the way to the bottom of the bay? |

Who has the right away all of the way to the bottom of the bay?- Bilge-Depends on what ya mean by "bottom of the bay" don't it? (g) I took the Wright out on an exercise back in 2000, and the Chief Mate and I were hanging out on the bow to release the brakes on the anchor windlasses, if needed...the "emergency brakes", so to speak. While we're shootin' the breeze in the Bremerton Channel(?), I remarked to him that he should be glad he wasn't on watch and checking the DARPA radars. He asked me why, and I pointed out that it was a clear summer Sunday morning, with a steady 10-15 knot wind from the northwest, and ascertained that he'd never sailed past Annapolis under these circumstances. Sho' 'nuff, the Bay Bridge heaves into view, and I directed his attention to the veritable infestation of sails just visible beneath the spans. I asked him what THAT target would look like on the radar plot. He chuckled ruefully and admitted that he really did prefer "emergency brake" duty. The development, of less then 300 homes is located in the middle of Elk Neck State Park. http://www.chesapeakeisle.org |

Right now, I'm looking for something a little more "out in the open" so to speak. Less "development" I guess I'm saying. Thanks, we're still going to check it out!! Don |

-I would hate to be any of you big boat guys trying to get past Annapolis on a weekend day like you just described! Hell, it's no fun even on a 21'er!- Bilge- There's a joke among us that a harbor pilot boards a container ship, makes his respects to the Master, and soon into the course of conversation on the bridge asks if they've seen much sail-powered traffic either on the way out or on the way in. The captain says: "Nope, ain't seen much sail at all....why'd'ye ask?" The pilot replies: "Well, because there's a mast and rigging hanging from yer port anchor." And believe me that Annapolis on a nice Sunday is like a golf course fairway compared to Shanghaii at 3 am. Gawd a'mighty...there's craft of every description going every which way...dugout canoes, motor sampans, steam ferries packed chock full o' Chinamen, 1200 foot long post Panamax containerships. The mate told me that his radar plot looked like slow-motion cup of BBs tossed into an empty bathtub...and that was just the stuff big enough to register a return.
