Default Garmin 72 accessories?

I bought a Garmin 72 over the weekend while on vacation at Lake George, NY
for about $150.

When I got home, I wanted to load in a chart for the areas I power boat in
Connecticut, and realized no cable was included in the package. I see
Garmin has a kit 010-10489-0o for $118 online plus shipping - this is almost
what I paid for the GPS!

Would I be better off returning this unit and getting a more complete
handheld GPS with cables, software etc?
thanks,
John

I bought a 12v adapter with a coiled cord and a separate serial adapter
for my eTrex through these guys. No complaints here, and I used the
power adapter all summer long in both my boat and my car.

Check out GPSGeek.com. They have what you're looking for at a whopping
price of $8.30. Look for part number 010-10141 under cables. I ordered
from them a short while back and was surprised that I got my order from
them in two days (west coast to east coast). That cable also appears to
be compatible with my GPSMAP 76CS, although the one that comes with the
GPSMAP 76CS is USB.

Well, several people have provided you links to cables, but no one has
informed you that unfortunately, the GPS 72 cannot display maps. About
all you can do is create waypoints on your PC, and transfer them to the
GPS.

You might be interested in the Garmin GPSMap 76, which is the same size
and shape as the GPS 72, but can dislay maps. www.tvnav.com is a very
reputable company, and has them for $250 new or $200 remanufactured. It
includes the PC interface cable. It comes with a built in basemap
including major roads and coastlines, but does not include marine
charts. That is provided by the Bluechart software, which TVnav sells for
$110.

Being a person who wouldn't own a Garmin anything even if you paid me,
the 72 is actually a glorified compass like the Magellan 300 series?

I've been trying to make due with paper charts, and reading the gps
coordinates on them, but I have hoping to have the island names, coastal
points of reference, and buoys on the gps.
I'll look at the 76 and see what I can do with it.
thanks for clearing up the mapping issue.,

Well, a little better than that. It does have a plotter screen, so you
can display your course and record your tracks, and it does have a larger,
higher resolution screen than some of Garmin's other handheld units, but
no mapping.

BTW, I personally give Garmin two thumbs up. My GPSMap 176c has been
very reliable, and Garmin sent me a free Bluecharts CD when they released
a newer version than the one I bought. My only real complaint is that
their blank data cards are WAY too friggin expensive. I mean, a 32mb
Garmin cart costs around 60 bucks, while I can buy a 1 gig compactflash
card for $67.

I had a run in with their "technical support" a few years ago and I
vowed to never buy a Garmin product again - and I haven't. :)

That card deal is pretty much the same with all of them though. They
all have their proprietary software and somebody else's isn't good
enough. :)

Take care.
