I currently have a Garmin 225 (DGPS) interfaced to a Furuno 1621 Radar and Standard Horizon VHF. It is about time to replace the Garmin while it still has commercial value. Question is.... what would you suggest as a replacement? Gene, even though I am a Garmin stockholder (with a teeny, tiny amount of stock), I suggest you take a close look at the Standard Horizon 170C. I got one for Yo Ho this past season, and I've been pleased with it. It uses the C-MAP+ cartridges. The operation is simple, though somewhat different than the typical Garmin unit. Screen is very bright, with fast redraws. I paid $700 and change, I think, but I see the price has creeped up a bit. The problem with these smaller units, of course, is that when you zoom for a closer look at, say, depths in a smaller area, the area you see on the plotter is really small. But they do work well. And a full color nearly 7" diagonal plotter for half the price of a Garmin with a slightly larger screen isn't bad. -- Email sent to is never read. |
