poll: life expectancy of mid-range 4-strokes

I vented about my 100hp Yamaha oputboard with 900 hours on them, both,
requiring major engine repairs in another thread.
I got a very humorous reply about how I "must have bought a lemon".
BWAHAHAHAHA.

Got me thinking though, is 900 hours a lot of hours for a $8000-9000 engine?
Maybe my expectations are too high. But darn, if I put 300 hours a year on
my boat, should I only expect the engines to last about 3 years? Is the
very funny gentleman who replied correct? Should I cash in my ocean going
lifestyle for a set of golf clubs?? :-(

I dunno. What kind of maintenance schedule did you follow?

I'm really not that funny.

I use mine about 400 a year and the 2002 60 merc 4 stroke came with a 5 year
warranty. We will see huh?
They already tore it down at 600 for a cooling problem ... for free. (power
head to leg gasket problem.)

300 hrs a year?? in Phil? area that's over 10 hrs per week in the
season being generous & 2 X 100 Hp is what?? minimum 20 kt cruise??

Unless you're a commercial user how do you manage to rack that many
hours up???

Anyway just asking.

Hell, Krause has just claimed to have over $1100 in diesel and $800 in
gasoline purchases already for his *boats* (wink, wink). Just previous to
that claim he was talking about the large amount of time he is spending on
political campaigning this year.

Go figure. He-he-he.

That's right, crap for brains. And yesterday, I added $105 to the
gasoline total.

Of course, since you spent most of your time at the dock when you
allegedly had a boat...

How's your wife, Dennis? Ready to get into boating again?

I am sure the head boat owner appreciated the tip.
