life expectancy of mid-range 4-strokes

I got a very humorous reply about how I "must have bought a lemon". BWAHAHAHAHA. Got me thinking though, is 900 hours a lot of hours for a $8000-9000 engine? I dunno. What kind of maintenance schedule did you follow? Maybe my expectations are too high. But darn, if I put 300 hours a year on my boat, should I only expect the engines to last about 3 years? Is the very funny gentleman who replied correct? I'm really not that funny. And not very bright, either. You are making assumptions here, and don't know crap about the application, maintenence, etc., etc., but think you can automatically make the claim that he "bought a lemon"? |

I put 3000 hours on my old Mariner/Merc 75 2 stroke but it was George
Washington's hatchet by the time I was done. I rebuilt or replaced almost everything that bolts on the engine. (electrical parts, tilt hydraulics, carbs etc) I never had to go into the foot or the power head tho and it was running strong when I sold it. Let's see how the 4 stroke does. |

Not sure what you are asking but the way I look at 300 hours is 30 days
worth of 10 hour days. Not really all that much. I begin boating in mid-April and end in November. Some days giant tuna fishing can be 16-20 hours on the water with most of it being with the engine running. Adds up quickly. Too quickly. "K. Should I cash in my ocean going lifestyle for a set of golf clubs?? :-( 300 hrs a year?? in Phil? area that's over 10 hrs per week in the season being generous & 2 X 100 Hp is what?? minimum 20 kt cruise?? Unless you're a commercial user how do you manage to rack that many hours up??? Anyway just asking. K |

OK so subtlety is missed around here all too often, I now find it best to just say outright; you're full of it. Granted you're not as stupid as Harry but hey you can probably breath unassisted:-) Not really all that much. Yes it "really" is up where you are!!! As I said; save you're a commercial user, 30 X 10 hr days of pleasure use in a short season; come on just put your hands up & we'll forget this little story:-) Like Harry the liar & many other lame BS'ers you well overshot the made up claim:-) I begin boating in mid-April and end in November. Some days giant tuna fishing can be 16-20 hours on the water with most of it being with the engine running. "Giant" tuna fishing "Giant"???? yes of course:-) & gee 6 "full" months at that latitude?? You are one tough BS'er you certainly are. The only thing getting "giant" about this story is your nose:-) Adds up quickly. Too quickly. What adds up is you should stop digging now before you actually pop out down he-) (you're allowed to check my headers as I am yours:-)), honestly sometimes I get concerned that others even take this BS seriously, as for you?? I'm not concerned at all you'll be just fine & keep selling!! selling!! selling!! something to anyone you can somewhere. Don't be too concerned about the few hundred dollars your "story" complains about for maintenance, damn 100HP X 2 at cruise are burning 14-15 US gals/hr @ say $2/gal?? or say those 10 hr days???:-) According to your own claim you're spending $300 a day on fuel:-) seems to me you'd be glad to spend the money in the "off" season just because you'd be so used to it. Gee; I do hope you see the humour in this, I certainly have. K "K. If you need more proof I can take a picture of my hour meter :-( Not needed:-) However on the subject; the usual guesstimate used with car engines is that about 50,000 miles is equiv to 1000 hrs, & sadly I think most here will agree with you that given their pricing OBs & most other recreation boating stuff is not good value. I'm sure yours have some life left yet, given some repair costs. I suppose you can get some comfort knowing the 4 strokes are currently about as good as it gets in OB reliability. Thanks for the exchange good fun:-) K "K. Smith" wrote in message ... mijoy wrote: Not sure what you are asking but the way I look at 300 hours is 30 days worth of 10 hour days. I'm in charge of maintence for about 6 Honda 130 four strokes. We have 2 harbor security boats with twin 130's (2000/2001 models). Both boats have over 2700 hrs on each engine. We never flush them, except when we pull them out of the water for their 100 hour maintence (change oil/filter and lower unit oil). All my Honda engines have been trouble free. They get run wide open for the most part and except for replacing lower units when the navy tries to 4 wheel them, I'm impressed. BTW a lower unit complete is 1500 bucks from Honda. Granted its a GSA price, but it's cheaper to replace than repair. They dont have the power of say a 135 opti max, and I under stand the new Honda 150 has a bunch more power. Basically these engines are left down in the water (salt) and the corrision factor is nill. Again for as much abuse as they take, im impressed, and this comes from a Merc man. Mabey the secerte is the 100 hr oil changes.............. Bill D Pensacola In article , Got me thinking though, is 900 hours a lot of hours for a $8000-9000 engine?
