Default help: ticking noise in outboard

I have a 2000 Johnson Oceanpro 115 (not a FICHT) which
developed a ticking sound, almost a knocking sound underload
at idle and low RPM. It is probably there at high RPM but
is "masked" by the engine revving.
It runs fine but this new sound is disturbing.
The engine is very well maintained. Any ideas are appreciated.

TIA,
Mike

Get a piece of garden hose say 4ft hold one end to your ear & go around
the engine while it's idling (careful moving things) to see if you can
pinpoint at least the area if not the actual cause itself.

Very Worst & not likely; If OBs are stored without enough oil in the
needle bearings they can rust over the moist winter etc.. The engine can
run fine because roller brgs have a bit of clearance anyway, but the
crankcase has almost no clearance space. Often you'll hear a metallic
tapping (the big end caps just touching the case) before the bearing
gives out.

Still a worry but not as much; The bits under the flywheel are/have
come adrift, fixed now is a fiddle but shouldn't cost too much.

Best It's got nothing to do with the engine itself & you should be able
to confirm with your hose.

So why for is that squad car screaming up your drive to notify your
parents ......... ticking ticking.
