Default 1996 Mariner/Mercury 115 4cyl offshore

Hi all:

This motor has run well since 7/96 till 2 weeks ago. I was fishing and
it just wouldn't start. No spark. I have a good manual and have tested
various things and here is what I have found.

Using the proper DVA multimeter I tested the stator output and it was a
too low reading (out of spec).

Next: The ohm test on the low rpm windings (blue wires) on the stator
shows a open circuit. No ohm readings what so ever. The high rpm
windings (red wires) have an Ohm reading within spec.

Obviously this points to a bad stator? Is there some other component I
should check or does it seem like I did the correct diagnosis?

Also I've read of a "red stator" upgrade, is that something I should
consider or is it something to ignor?
