It didn't take a Chinese hyper-sonic cruise missile
to put a US aircraft carrier out of commission.

All it took was a virus.

Does it matter? We should scrap at least half the navy and stop wasting
money on big new ships.

It does cause one to realize how vulnerable we may be everywhere

We're not about to get into a shooting war with a nuclear power and the
terrorists around the world aren't stymied by their comrades being
killed en masse, so what's the point? These ships are vulnerable.

Better we should build more hospital ships and dispatch them where
needed around the world. We'd be spending far less and building good will.

When you cobble equipment with canabalized parts because budget doesn’t allow for new, you have results like Operation Eagle Claw. And that was a major turning point in Jimmys attempt for re-election

They are a mobile extension of our ability to defend the USA

They are not to go fight a nuclear war.

Bull****.

We don't need more warships, we need fewer, and fewer are easier to
maintain and budget parts for, too.

This country's infrastructure is crumbling, we have serious public
health issues, we have dozens of other problems. Spending more on the
military is not the solution.

Nope. Fact, Harry. Ronnie capitalized on the Eagle Claw disaster to get elected by raising the fact that the military was too weak and had to be rebuilt.

Of course they are. China is the world's second largest defense spender
and is a major arms exporter. Some of the weapons technology is more
advanced than ours.

and according to Defense News:

"Russian defense budget remains the third largest in the world, dwarfing
the military expenditures of most European states combined."

Good thing, huh?

I think your data is in error or obsolete.

"China spent $250 billion on its military in 2018, an increase of 83%
during the period from 2009 through 2018. The U.S., as noted, spent $649
billion, but that represents a reduction of 17% during the same period."

But probably more importantly:

Total Chinese military budget in 1989 was $18 billion. The figure rose
to $250 billion in 2018.

"It could be argued that China actually outspends the U.S. on its
military when personnel costs and purchasing power are taken into
account. In fact, Army Chief of Staff Mark Milley made that argument in
front of a Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee in May 2018."

"Good Will" doesn't seem to really buy us much. Those people still
screw us over the first chance they get, usually while we are still
giving them things. Afghanistan would be a good example. Aid workers
are in as much danger as soldiers, maybe more because they are more
vulnerable. A hospital ship in a country like that is nothing but a
big white target with a red bullseye on every flat surface.

Bull****.

We don't need more warships, we need fewer, and fewer are easier to
maintain and budget parts for, too.

The problem with Eagle Claw was that Carter had an irrational belief
in the Navy and would not use the appropriate Army helicopters that
had filters on the air intakes so they could operate in the desert.
Their pit stop took out so many of them that the had to call the whole
thing off. It got worse from there. We also were not prepared for
desert warfare because they were not training for it so a little sand
storm took out a good chunk of the evacuating force. Look up cluster
**** in the military dictionary and there is a picture of Operation
Eagle Claw with that smiling jackass Carter standing there..

This country's infrastructure is crumbling, we have serious public
health issues, we have dozens of other problems. Spending more on the
military is not the solution.

The DoD budget is just a big white collar jobs program. Since everyone
is bound by prevailing union contracts (Davis Bacon) you should be

Seems Sadam would disagree on carriers being ineffective.

Most of the attacks on Iraq came from land based bombers (One of the
reasons 3/4ths of the 9/11 attackers were Saudi) but we have had
success beating up other little countries with our carriers. It has
really been the threat more than an actual attack. You do get their
attention when you park a Carrier Battle Group just over their horizon
and FA-18s are making low level supersonic passes over your city
breaking windows.
