would be snowing like hell in Gaithersburg and it was raining down in

It often happens that the weather headed directly for us veers north to Maryland or Pennsylvania.

Yup, the one I always worried about was that low pressure area coming
up from the south, crashing into really cold air coming over the
mountains. It would pick up moisture from the ocean or the bay and
dump a huge pile of snow on us. It didn't really happen that often but
it was always exciting when it did.
