As Senate Republicans press for a swift vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Senate Democrats are investigating a new allegation of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh. The claim dates to the 1983-84 academic school year, when Kavanaugh was a freshman at Yale University. The offices of at least four Democratic senators have received information about the allegation, and at least two have begun investigating it. Senior Republican staffers also learned of the allegation last week and, in conversations with The New Yorker, expressed concern about its potential impact on Kavanaugh’s nomination. Soon after, Senate Republicans issued renewed calls to accelerate the timing of a committee vote. The Democratic Senate offices reviewing the allegations believe that they merit further investigation. “This is another serious, credible, and disturbing allegation against Brett Kavanaugh. It should be fully investigated,” Senator Mazie Hirono, of Hawaii, said. An aide in one of the other Senate offices added, “These allegations seem credible, and we’re taking them very seriously. If established, they’re clearly disqualifying.” The woman at the center of the story, Deborah Ramirez, who is fifty-three, attended Yale with Kavanaugh, where she studied sociology and psychology. Later, she spent years working for an organization that supports victims of domestic violence. The New Yorker contacted Ramirez after learning of her possible involvement in an incident involving Kavanaugh. The allegation was conveyed to Democratic senators by a civil-rights lawyer. For Ramirez, the sudden attention has been unwelcome, and prompted difficult choices. She was at first hesitant to speak publicly, partly because her memories contained gaps because she had been drinking at the time of the alleged incident. In her initial conversations with The New Yorker, she was reluctant to characterize Kavanaugh’s role in the alleged incident with certainty. After six days of carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorney, Ramirez said that she felt confident enough of her recollections to say that she remembers Kavanaugh had exposed himself at a drunken dormitory party, thrust his penis in her face, and caused her to touch it without her consent as she pushed him away. Ramirez is now calling for the F.B.I. to investigate Kavanaugh’s role in the incident. “I would think an F.B.I. investigation would be warranted,” she said. From the New Yorker Amazing how these stories, known to some Democrats, are suddenly becoming public. Schumer is on record (before any of this became news) as saying they will do *anything* necessary (emphasis mine) to block Kavanaugh's confirmation. Makes one wonder. |

Schumer is on record (before any of this became news) as saying they will do *anything* necessary (emphasis mine) to block Kavanaugh's confirmation. Makes one wonder. Ms. Ramirez was really reluctant to come forward, as would be many women in such circumstances. Also, your good buddy (!) Michael Avenatti said over the weekend that he has another woman, a third woman, as a client who had an unwanted sexual encounter with Kavanaugh. Axios is reporting on that claim: Michael Avenatti says he represents a woman with information on Kavanaugh Michael Avenatti tweeted Sunday night that he represents "a woman with credible information regarding Judge [Brett] Kavanaugh and Mark Judge." "I represent a woman with credible information regarding Judge Kavanaugh and Mark Judge. We will be demanding the opportunity to present testimony to the committee and will likewise be demanding that Judge and others be subpoenaed to testify. The nomination must be withdrawn." The details: Avenatti later tweeted that he had been in contact with Mike Davis, the Senate Judiciary Committee's chief counsel for nominations. In an email, Avenatti told Davis that his team was aware of "significant evidence" that Brett Kavanaugh, his former classmate Mark Judge and others targeted women with alcohol and drugs at parties in the 1980s in order to allow "a train" of men to take advantage of them sexually. Avenatti's email suggests there is more to the allegations revealed earlier tonight by a Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer report in the New Yorker, which details a second alleged instance of sexual misconduct. In the report, Mark Judge's ex-girlfriend also recalls him telling her "ashamedly about an incident that involved [Judge] and other boys taking turns having sex with a drunk woman." Kavanaugh and Judge both deny the allegations. I really don't understand why the Repubs are so "driven" to confirm their flawed candidate. There's no shortage of right-wingers, some without sexual assault charges, willing to kiss Trump's ass for a seat on the high court, and no matter what happens in the November elections, the Repubs still control the U.S. Senate, and that is all that matters. Kavanaugh could withdraw, Trump could pick another right-winger, and he or she could be confirmed prior to the seating of the new Congress. |

The same seems to be true of the Ford accusation. I doubt you like the other choices any better, Amy Barrett or Ray Kethledge. |

It seems pretty obvious that these women are last-ditch underhanded efforts to derail his confirmation. In today's climate, all an opposing party has to do is find one woman that will say something happened 30 years ago, and the man's career is pretty much over. The Dems are wearing it out though. That dog may not hunt much longer. It's already getting tired. |
