Norway is a founding member of NATO and a strong supporter of it. It
trains and crosstrains with NATO forces from other countries, such as
the 'Mericans. Life just isn't as complicated as these ignorant righties
want it to be.

They have about as good a chance as 50,000 army guys have in holding

Did you read the article? The 300 or so Marines were there for six
months on a NATO training exercise. Now Norway wants to more than
double the number to 700, make the deployment a five year gig
and locate them near the Russian border.

And you think 700 U.S. troops near the border will stop the Russians
from invading if they so desire? They don't have to do that, what with
the way Trump is ****ting on the Western alliance, crapping on NATO, and
dumping on our long-time allies, all the Russians have to do is sit
around and wait, and, from their perspective, watch Trump weaken the West.

1. Who said the Marines are there to hold off a Russian invasion?

The point (and my question) was ... if Norway feels the need to have
700 Marines permanently located near the Russian border, why do they
have to be US Marines? Norway can certainly train and equip their
own forces.

2. This question has absolutely nothing to do with Trump. It seems
you just can't help yourself in taking any opportunity to
bring him up in any discussion. Next you'll be telling Tim
he won't be able to fix up or upgrade his pontoon boat because
Canadian aluminum will be too expensive due to Trump.

I could take it far afield on my utility trailer to ride around some of the beautiful trails in this province.

You do know that Norway's population is just over 5 million people.
I'm Sure they to the best they can with that limitation.

So they need 700 US Marines? They have a decent sized military. Why the US Marines unless they're
looking for a tripwire?

I think 700 recon marines could take Norway.

I'm sure the norwegians like the fact that trump is such a fan of putin.

..........

What’s that got to do with anything?

Look at a map and read up on 20th Century history in that region.

When I look at the 20th century, Norway should be more worried about
the Germans getting frisky than the Russians.

Obviously, oblique references aren't your forte. I'm aware of Norway's
"history" with Germany, but the Germans seem to be tamed of invasion
aggressiveness. Norway shares a border with Russia, and Murmansk, the
Russian seaport, is close, and the Bear is hungry.

The Norwegians spend their resources on improving and sustaining the
lives of their fellow citizens. They have relatively small armed forces.
