A friend reported it was so cold this morning that he actually saw a liberal with his hands in his
own pockets! Pushing 12F right now. |

Only problem is that after it passes, the cold returns with overnight lows predicted to be minus 8 or so. That's temp, not wind chill. Harry will be happy that I was not wearing my "board shorts" this morning when I did "water". At 0700 it was overcast and 10c here (50f) with the wind blowing 12-15 out of the north. It seemed colder on the water. Water temp was 17.9c (64f). It is up to a tad over 60f now that the sun is out. |

They don't really differentiate between north and south of DC tho. The worst case for So Md is a low coming up from the south, crashing into a cold front coming across the mountains and stalling there. I am not sure of that is what is going on but if that is true, you will get buried if it is cold enough. Usually the snow stops in Montgomery County tho because the warm air from the bay and ocean hold it back. There were lots of nights when I left Clinton in sleet and freezing rain to hit 4" or more of snow about the time I got to Rockville. By the time you got to Gathersburg/Germantown it was a white out. |

It runs in "open cycle" when it first starts then switches to "closed cycle" where the ECU controls the emissions and a bad O2 sensor or MAF sensor can screw up the mix enough so it stalls at idle. If I start it with the key in the ignition, there's no problem at all. I've had an MAF sensor go bad. That affects the running of the truck. Don't think that's the problem, or at least I hope not. Those damn sensors are not cheap. If you think about it, the remote starter has to tell the vehicle that your foot is on the brake with the "key" in the ignition and in the "start" position, then the "run" position to start it and keep it running. I would think it's done with software control and data these days, but if it's still done with relays simulating sensor activation, I could see the "run" relay being bad. Be aware that your code scanner does engine codes, but there's a more advanced scanner that the dealership (and some indies) have that can also scan chassis codes. They are not standard codes but are specific to each manufacturer. When the Corvette's braking ECM died, my scanner told me almost nothing (the dash info center told me more!). The indie shop had the GM scanner, and in less than two minutes told me exactly what was wrong. |

He has a diesel. Completely different system. In fact, it may not have an O2 sensor at all. In a diesel, it gets full air and only the fuel delivery through the injectors are controlled. It has a mass air flow sensor. Went out on one of our camping trips. The Chevy place got a good price for the diagnosis, installation, and subsequent testing. They charged me over $400 for the sensor, which I could probably have picked up for around $200 on Amazon. But, when you're away from home, you're kind of at their mercy. At least they did the fix in one afternoon. |

Those damn sensors are not cheap. Are you touching the gas pedal? Nobody does that with the remote. Don't know how John's diesel truck works but both my former Ford F-350 diesel and John Deere tractor diesel had glow plugs. I didn't have a remote starter for either. In the truck you'd turn the ignition key to "on" and a glow plug light would illuminate. You waited for it to go out (only took a few seconds) and then you'd start it. On the tractor the procedure to start in cold weather was to advance the hand throttle control to almost full throttle, turn the key to the left for about 15-20 seconds that would heat up the glow plug and then turn to the right to start, with your other hand on the throttle arm. As soon as it fired, you pulled the throttle back to idle. I don't even know if John's truck has a glow plug. |

A 'check engine' light showed up about two weeks ago, and I've not yet run the diagnostics. Maybe they are related. That could be a bad sensor. I don’t think Herring has a glow plug. :) -- Posted with my iPhone 8+. |

Pushing 12F right now. A regular heat wave. I'll take it. Eyeing this potential coastal storm for Thurs - Fri. Might luck out and have it go too far out to sea. Otherwise ... Only problem is that after it passes, the cold returns with overnight lows predicted to be minus 8 or so. That's temp, not wind chill. This has been one of the coldest December/January months I can remember having for a long time. Soon will break a 100 year record for temps remaining below 20 (F). For the past week the daytime temps haven't even got close to 20, staying in the low to mid teens at best. 0 degrees yesterday morning. This morning it actually warmed up to 3 degrees. Remote starter getting a workout! :-) My remote starter, which has been working just fine for years, decided to go haywire. The truck starts, runs about three seconds and dies. A 'check engine' light showed up about two weeks ago, and I've not yet run the diagnostics. Maybe they are related. That could be a bad sensor. Johns diesel may be jelling the diesel at those temps you people are experiencing. May need the additives. The guys I knew who had the old 70s GM diesel cars used to squirt a gallon or so of gasoline in the tank in the winter so they would start. They still were pretty cranky in the winter and that was the DC winter, not the Boston or Chicago winter. |

But, I would think the glow plug process would be part of the remote start process when it's cold. You'd think. Is there a delay from the time you push the remote to start it until the engine actually turns over? The glow plugs need a few seconds to heat up. Maybe your remote is designed more for using in hot weather where you want to start the AC ahead of time. Yup, I have to hold the start button on the remote for 7-8 seconds. That's what makes me think the glow plugs would be part of the process. The glow plug light stays on for only a couple seconds when I'm starting the truck from the inside. |

Using the remote, hit the lock, hit starter button, hold it about 7 seconds, truck starts - everthing normal so far. But within about two seconds the engine stops. It's broke. :-) Yup. Think you're right. The big question is 'how broke?' |

If it fires at all the glow plugs did all they can do the way I understand it but maybe the cylinders are still not hot enough to support combustion. Try starting it normally, run it a minute or so, turn it off, then try the remote start. |
