college students. I was not impressed by their knowledge of and skills
in their native language. There are a couple of regular posters in this
newsgroup whose skills in English are at least as bad as my old students.

"Social justice" typically refers to trying to provide equal economic,
political and social rights and opportunities. Oh, I forgot...this is
rec.boats, and words and phrases can mean whatever the typical

Well, I know what social justice is...I've never heard the phraset used
in connection with "proper" use of the English language.

They were doing it in public schools when I was teaching. Some students were doing poorly because
they never did their homework. This was reflected as a bunch of 'zeros' in their grade. So the
county made it damn near impossible to count homework as part of the quarter grade unless each
student's homework was actually 'graded'. For me this meant about 4 hours extra work each night, and
on weekends. Many teachers just said 'f - it' and stopped grading homework at all. Of course, the
scores on tests went down, and just as many kids flunked.

Dumb it down is right.
