Me, I went salmon fishing, not catching, on the Sacramento River at Walnut Grove. Slight breeze, hot, needed my shorts, not long pants. Saw one salmon hooked, one boat with one dragging in the river and one acquaintances that lives in the area, had 2 early in the morning. Still do not understand people dragging a fish in the water. In the river, the surface temp is probably still 65, which makes for poor quality fish, and we do get sea lions all the way to Sacramento. They will take the fish off the stringer. Gut them and put them on ice for nice quality fish. These salmon are far enough down river, that 90% are still ocean quality meat. Further up river, they may be mush, black spawned out fish. |

Maybe they didn't have a permit (if required) and wanted to be able to cut it loose if the mounties showed up. You know, "Aw, it was just a dogfish, officer." |

Just have a line in the water without a license will get you a ticket. |

That is the thought about fish on a stringer but a lot of time they die and the deterioration starts immediately. Most state and federal laws require that you are not filleting them on the water tho because it is harder to enforce size limits. Throwing the whole fish into the cooler or dropping them in a live well is the way to go if you think the cops will see you. |

Do not want to give up space for a fish cooler. Could plastic bag them and throw in the beer cooler. My late fishing partner hated for bait to be in the food cooler. |
