Thanks George Bush Sr. for this problem. Nothing better than a glass of
water that tastes like turpentine. How's your buddies in the oil business. Still against alcohol to oxygenate the fuel. A recent report from the Environmental Working Group found that MTBE contamination is present in the drinking water supplies for over 15 million Americans. MTBE has been classified as an animal carcinogen with potential human carcinogenic hazard potential by the US EPA . MTBE in Drinking Water Sources MTBE has been found in test samples of source water or finished drinking water from 1,515 public water systems in 28 states.1 An increasing number of studies have detected MTBE in ground water throughout the country; in some instances these contaminated waters are sources of drinking water. Low levels of MTBE can make drinking water supplies undrinkable due to its offensive turpentine-like taste and odor. Contamination of drinking water sources can occur from: a.. leaking underground storage tanks (UST's) and above ground fuel storage tanks b.. pipelines c.. refueling spills d.. automobile accidents damaging the fuel tank e.. consumer disposal of "old" gasoline" f.. emissions from older marine engines And to a lesser degree: a.. storm water runoff b.. precipitation mixed with MTBE in the air MTBE dissolves easily in water and does not "cling" well to soil, allowing it to migrate faster and farther in the ground than other gasoline components, and more likely to contaminate public water systems and private drinking water wells. MTBE does not degrade (breakdown) easily and is difficult and costly to remove from ground water. MTBE is generally more resistant to natural biodegradation than other gasoline components. Some monitoring wells have shown little overall reduction in MTBE concentration over several years which suggests that MTBE is relatively persistent in ground water. In contrast, studies of surface water (lakes and reservoirs have shown that MTBE volatilizes (evaporates) relatively quickly. Sources: 1 "More Trouble with MTBE in Drinking Water". What idiots!! We are already sitting on millions and millions of gallons of renewable energy - dirt and farmers. And we are already paying them **not** to grow some of the stuff they grow (but that's yet another issue). Think biofuels people. Think. We grow it - no foreign oil to import. It burns cleaner than dino oil, and some even think it smells good. The technology is here, today. No investment required. The distribution is here, today. Same in-the-ground tanks, same pumps, same tankers to transport, same overland pipes. Just how do you think you are going to transport that explosive hydrogen? Remember the Hindenburg? (I don't - not that old) I don't want to get rear-ended in a hydrogen fueled car. Do You? Bio-fuels, specifically biodiesel, is much much safer than hydrogen. That's why many boaters run diesel engines - safety. 45-50MPG in today's diesel engines. And on, and on,,,,,,,,,,,. Hydrogen??? Dim-wits. A$%-kissing, idiot, ignorant politicians jumping on yet another worthless bandwagon. But why not? It's not their money. NOSPAM: Please remove "my" in "comcast" to reply. |
