Default UC Berkley is laying off 500 people

Think it has anything to do with the new $12 minimum wage? (going to
$15)

Nope. It's been in the news for a while.

Truth be told, all of the California "free" colleges are in financial
trouble because the give away model in the golden state is broken and
the governor is cutting everywhere to keep the lights on.
If it was a republican doing it they would be marching on Sacramento
with torches but this is "moon beam" so they accept it. ... and they
must.
It just demonstrated the futility of the welfare state model, even in
the richest state in the US. (California is the 7th richest economy in
the world or there abouts)

Not at all. The college simply will lay off those who are the weakest.
It's the 'Merican way. The cause is not the minimum wage.

Oh, and "townhall"? Really?

It is going to be those at the bottom who are laid off, not anyone up
in the dean's office, unless they are cleaning it.

SF gate ran a similar story

That was simply the first of many hits on Google. Try it yourself...you might like the
results...not.

The telling line is "But the question is whether there really is a
need to hemorrhage resources on executives.”"

Nobody on the left wants to talk about the income inequality in our
education system. The senior executives make the same kind of CEO
salaries the left is always bitching about in the private sector for a
comparable size company..
