The Z3 was not a home run for BMW. I'm still surprised the S2000, or a
replacement, isn't on the market.

The Z3 and the Z4 are regarded as "girly" cars in some circles.
My wife had a Z4. I had a Porsche. :-)

As pure driver's cars, BMW went downhill after the corporation decided
it wanted to offer luxury alternatives to Mercedes. The best pure
driving machines it offered were the 2002ti and one of the "5" series,
maybe the early 535s. After that, the company got into "plush."

For years and years a Porsche 911 was my dream car. Now I have no desire for one.
Maybe, like you say, I grew up.

Your height would make a 911 difficult. I am only 5'11" and, although I
was comfortable once seated inside and had sufficient leg room (mine was
a six speed manual transmission) it was still a chore bending in half
to get in or to exit the car. Still, if you get a thrill out of
handling and unreal acceleration it's hard to find a better designed
car. The one I had was a twin turbo rated at 450 hp. My lawyer friend
had a naturally aspirated version rated at something like 320 or 350 hp.
His had all the performance anyone would need for a daily driver, IMO.
Mine was a luxury version of the 911 Porsche produces for racing. It had
all the leather and wood trim that the full bore racing version does not
have in order to further reduce weight.

Hey, I was able to easily squeeze into the old 70's era Lotus Europa, but it took
about 20 minutes of contortions to do so.

In the late 60's as a 2LT in Germany, I had a 59' Karmann Ghia which I pretended was
my Porsche. Lots of leg room in that thing. I once had to pick up a drunk about 60
miles from our post at about 2 am. I went to the barracks and got someone to ride
with me and off we went in the Karmann Ghia.

Picked the guy up from the German police station. Big guy, almost as tall as me and
very stocky. Made him ride in the back all the way home. The back of the KG was
probably comparable to the rear seat in your Porsche.

Your 911 turbo was (is) a great car, but it not just a trimmed out race version. A GT3 or RS has many different parts like brakes and suspension, along with much stiffer spring rates and a lower ride height. The engines are tweaked, and the RS even has polycarbonate windows to save weight. It's more appropriate to think that they took your car, stripped out all the street stuff, installed a bunch of race parts, and turned it into a barely street-legal race car.

Most folks say the GT3 isn't any fun as a daily driver on the streets.

I agree. That's another reason why I drive the SUV. I've logged less
than 100 miles in the current Z4 in two years and that was out of
necessity.

Having owned both, the Mercedes is more "plush" than the BMW in the same
category (ML550 vs X5). The only thing I don't like about the Mercedes
is the handling. The X5 can run some tight corners (on-ramps) at speed
confidently. The computer in the Mercedes is slower to react and
stiffen the suspension.

The Z4 is like driving a go-cart. It goes where you point it and your
ass is 6" off the ground.

This discussion has saved me a bucket load of money. Now I'm no longer interested in
Porsche 911's, Porsche Boxsters or Caymans, BMW Z3's and Z4's, Honda S2000's, Mazda
M5's, Lotus's, or DeLoreans.

Might have to start looking at the Mercedes SLK class. I might give some serious
thought to this:

Oh, not the car, the bike in the background.

Or grow up.

That car sold for just over $60K when new. They are over $100K now.
