Every two weeks the crew lined up in and outside the mess decks to be paid. When my turn came, I'd present my ID card and the dispersing officer would hand me a small, manilla envelope with all $50 and some change in it. We were paid in cash back then. Now-a-days everything is direct deposit. I went to the bank with the quartermaster a few times. I think the whole crew made less than $25,000 but it was all cash. They took the chief Gunners mate and one other (armed) guy. Our 45s were condition 4, mostly just for show but we did have 3 loaded mags. |
