The big time forecasters say that this winter here isn't to be as cold but have a lot more snow than last year 47 when I got up this morning. Haven't decided yet, whether or not to brave the cold and do outside work today. ;-) It was down in the 60s here last night. A few more nights like that and the pool will be too cold to get in, at least for us. I know those folks up north are OK with the water being in the 70s but we like it in the 80s. Pfffft.if the ocean water hits the high 60's we're happy as clams. When the ocean here hits 60f it is an El Niño year. Normal is 48-55 year round. But part of that is the upwelling that feeds the Eco system. Some places here are a mile deep 1.5 miles offshore. |

We were in sunny Santa Cruz and also on the Oregon coast. http://gfretwell.com/ftp/california/...nta%20Cruz.jpg The first time I flew out to California, in the 1960s sometime, we ended up at Malibu, and I wanted to go for a swim. It was summer, it was warm out and I was wearing Bermuda shorts. So I took off my sneakers, socks, and tee shirt and ran into the ocean. Holy ****, it was cold! Came right out. July or August, I think. Now, if memory serves, Long Island Sound was only in the very low 70s when I swam in it. I don't know what the temp was in Malibu, but it was not tolerable. Bummer. ![]() ..this year the seas off SoCal were up to 77f. Warmest I ever remember. Most of the time summer is 66-72f water. Why I own several different wetsuits. Mostly use the shots spring suit in Sept when we go to San Diego. |

Except for infrequent rain storms, is sunny at the coast. And when we get large storms way out at sea, is great to take a day over to the coast to watch huge breakers. When we get the 20-25' swells. |

We were in California in June and Oregon in July. (separate trips) The beach was freezing both times. Oregon was in the 50s and low 60s at the beach. Inland was a lot warmer and the Gorge (Columbia river near Mt Hood) was "Florida hot". Up on the mountain was a lot cooler. http://gfretwell.com/ftp/Oregon/Mt%2...0Mt%20Hood.jpg This is near the Timberline Lodge where "The Shining" was filmed. When we got down to San Diego/LaJolla the weather was very pleasant, mid 70s but the water is still pretty cold. |

Since the water is cold here, you get cold beaches in the summer up north California. Winter is cold in the inland valleys so nice beach weather. We have been in Carmel at 5 pm in February on the beach and 75 degrees. Water still cold. |
