You must have been one hell of a brave soldier. If I didn't have a reason to go to DC, I wouldn't either... It's a beautiful city with many first-rate museums, restaurants, and parks. I can see why someone from ****ville, Illinois, wouldn't like it. Yes, there are some very nice parts of DC. And then there's the rest - the 'high crime' areas controlled mostly by druggies. You'd walk your lovely bride down the sidewalks in those areas after 10 PM? Maybe with a few of your guns in hand.
