Beater boat parts engine
Bought a beater parts engine over the weekend. $75 bucks. Burnt cylinder but got it to have a spare lower. You never know what you'll hit when the river is high. Plus it's got good electrics. Just burnt motor

I found it on a Facebook trader/classified page. Another guy was cleaning out his shed. I could have had a 60 Merc. For the same amount but didn't know if the lower would interchange so I went with the big un.
both had burnt Pistons. Not worth a rebuild. The guys dad had them passed away, he wanted them out. His dad ran gasohol in them. Oils don't mix well with that stuff. |

I believe he once said that a leading cause of burned pistons was if one of the carbs got leaned out compared to the others. He had a business rebuilding and reselling them. |

Sure thing Wayne. That's what my mechanic told me too. That's why I had them checked out. No, the guy I got the engine from said his dad loaded it with E-85 and did it in. Then he got a 60 and it did ok for a couple years and accidentally did it again. That took care of that. He was tired of it by then and scrapped the boat to use the trailer for hauling firewood and yard chores. (Smart man!) After the gentleman passed away this summer, his son decided it was time to clean the place out. So I got a cheap parts unit. If mine blows it'll probable get the same treatment. Lol |

Also impressed me as to how relatively civil most of the discussions were back then. |

Almost no political foolishness either. It is interesting to see people give advice for working on the OMC 'stringer' drives etc. Yep, those were the days... |

There was also a fair amount of humorous and good natured banter, story telling, etc. Even YKW had some good advice every now and then. We've lost a lot and I don't know if it will ever come back. |
