Bought a beater parts engine over the weekend. $75 bucks. Burnt cylinder but got it to have a spare lower. You never know what you'll hit when the river is high. Plus it's got good electrics. Just burnt motor

I found it on a Facebook trader/classified page. Another guy was cleaning out his shed. I could have had a 60 Merc. For the same amount but didn't know if the lower would interchange so I went with the big un.
both had burnt Pistons. Not worth a rebuild. The guys dad had them passed away, he wanted them out. His dad ran gasohol in them. Oils don't mix well with that stuff.

I'm not really an expert on those old Mercs but I remember a few
things from when Wayne (Clams) Canino was here. I believe he once
said that a leading cause of burned pistons was if one of the carbs
got leaned out compared to the others. He had a business rebuilding
and reselling them.

Sure thing Wayne. That's what my mechanic told me too. That's why I had them checked out. No, the guy I got the engine from said his dad loaded it with E-85 and did it in. Then he got a 60 and it did ok for a couple years and accidentally did it again. That took care of that. He was tired of it by then and scrapped the boat to use the trailer for hauling firewood and yard chores. (Smart man!)
After the gentleman passed away this summer, his son decided it was time to clean the place out. So I got a cheap parts unit.
If mine blows it'll probable get the same treatment. Lol

Just for giggles (while awaiting the great debate tonight) I was just
reading some rec.boats posts from 1999. Lots of long forgotten names.
Also impressed me as to how relatively civil most of the discussions
were back then.

I do that too Richard. Yes, lots of names gone by. some or mot of the links aren't active either. Almost no political foolishness either.

It is interesting to see people give advice for working on the OMC 'stringer' drives etc.

Yep, those were the days...

Yes, I was relatively new to serious power boating in those days and I
learned a lot from this group. There was also a fair amount of
humorous and good natured banter, story telling, etc. Even YKW had
some good advice every now and then. We've lost a lot and I don't

Yeah, the period of time that I was reading was right after I had

I have to admit that my demeanor was much more positive and included

I guess we all share in the blame for the deterioration of the newsgroup
but there is no question that it has been affected in a major way by
Harry and his intolerance for anyone who doesn't see politics (or
anything for that matter) his way. The downfall started shortly after
the time period I was reading ... and escalated in the Bush/Gore
presidential contest.

I don't think Harry ever got over that election.

Yeah, I originally established the "boats of rec.boats" website. It was
before the days of packaged website design software and I did it
all in html using a spreadsheet. It kept me busy in the evenings and
weekends and I learned a lot about witing html code. At one point it
grew to over 100 submissions and pages and had viewers from all over the
world.

I maintained it for a couple of years but then became very involved in
important issues at my company. I offered the site up to anyone who
wanted to take it over and one person (forget who) took it over.
For some reason he could only copy a portion of the pictures and
submissions, so when he re-established it on another server it was not
anywhere as large as the original.

that.
He was tired of it by then and scrapped the boat to use the trailer
for hauling firewood and yard chores. (Smart man!)
After the gentleman passed away this summer, his son decided it was
time to clean the place out. So I got a cheap parts unit.
If mine blows it'll probable get the same treatment. Lol

Wow...I remember Çlams. Haven't come across his name on the two or
three
boating related discussion boards I read. I hope he's still above the
ground. :)

Just for giggles (while awaiting the great debate tonight) I was just
reading some rec.boats posts from 1999. Lots of long forgotten
names.
Also impressed me as to how relatively civil most of the discussions
were back then.

===

Yes, I was relatively new to serious power boating in those days and I
learned a lot from this group. There was also a fair amount of
humorous and good natured banter, story telling, etc. Even YKW had
some good advice every now and then. We've lost a lot and I don't
know if it will ever come back.

Yeah, the period of time that I was reading was right after I had
created the "boats of rec.boats" website and people were submitting
pictures and descriptions of their boats for inclusion on the site.
I have to admit that my demeanor was much more positive and included
a lot more humor and good natured posts back then.

YOU set up that website? I didn't know that. In the land before
digital cameras and scanners(at least, for myself) I could have sent
pics of my boat and had them posted as well.

Oh, puh-lease. Find another "object" for your obsession, fellas...these
accusations are boring and bull****.

Really? So tell us then. Who really won the 2000 election? :-)

The same special interests who have won every election since 1988.

I'm not really an expert on those old Mercs but I remember a few

Sure thing Wayne. That's what my mechanic told me too. That's why I

Yeah, I originally established the "boats of rec.boats" website. It
was before the days of packaged website design software and I did it
all in html using a spreadsheet. It kept me busy in the evenings and
weekends and I learned a lot about witing html code. At one point it
grew to over 100 submissions and pages and had viewers from all over
the world.
