I'd bet on the grizzly bear and, of course, that is such a distinct possibility in SE Florida. :) I seldom go to SE Florida. I also have no interest in a "50" anything. Oh. I thought when you said a guy who shoots a .50 regularly could get off additional shots in a hurry, you had first-hand experience firing the weapons. I don't play NFL football but I know when a quarterback completes a pass. I have seen guys shoot hand cannons and the guys who do it a lot are pretty comfortable with them ... including that Casull. I did say "less than a second" and that is a pretty long time for a skilled shooter to get back on the same target. I like SE Florida, but I also have no interest in 50 caliber weaponry. Where did SE florida come into this in the first place? If I bought anything 50 cal it would be a Barrett but I really have zero use for one. Maybe if I lived in Fumbuck Arizona or Montana I might have a place to shoot one but there are not that many 1000 yard opportunities anywhere I might be. The poster who allegedly is buying the hand cannon lives in SE Florida, where, apparently, griz roam the subdivision. I read that Barretts are great for knocking over two liter soda bottles at 1000 yards. There must be something else a civilian can do with one, but I'm not sure what. I am sure a guy who shoots one regularly could get back down in far less than a second. A guy who shoots one regularly probably wouldn't need to worry about 'quick followup shots'. [NB: Harry does not fall into that category.] If you are going to buy commercial ammo, you won't be able to afford to shoot this a lot. It looks like the ammo is $2 a round. OTOH the bullets are about a quarter each in quantity of 500 (at Natchez) so the reloaders really make out. Powder and primers add another nickel or so. I thought about that. I probably won't shoot it often but I will save the brass. I've never reloaded but it's something I might try when I retire and have more time. I paid a hair under $1.80/round for 100 rounds with shipping. Until now I didn't know reloading was that economical. There are some very good reloaders at the local gun show. Maybe I can trade them for ammo? Reloading is all about time. Depending on the loader some can go pretty fast. A turret press is basically a little ammo factory but they are expensive. I have a single station press and when I was loading, I could get about one a minute average, end to end, from fired brass to loaded round. That is loading 50. The more you load at once, the better you average because setup is most of the time on a short run. I used to just make primed brass until I had a shoe box full and then it was pretty quick to select a load and bang out a bunch. I was really just loading .38 and I had a whole lot of brass, still have quite a bit. (1000?) Were you melting down and pouring lead or were you buying ready made bullets? The whole process somehow reminds me of alchemy. :) -- Proud to be a Liberal. |

Quick followup shots are a bitch, and if you miss the bear, the bear is going to have you for lunch. You disagree, eh? Define "quick". I am sure a guy who shoots one regularly could get back down in far less than a second. Who shoots one of those cannons "regularly"? Groundhogs? If you start asking "why" then why do you need an assault rifle and a 357magnum to shoot bottles? We won't even mention the 45 you don't ever shoot. I don't need the AR or the .357 MAG revolver. I have them so I can shoot them and, unlike a Barrett, there are places I can shoot them nearby and for a reasonable amount of $$$. The pair of .45s I have are collector's pieces that are appreciating as they sleep in the safe. I didn't buy them to shoot them. -- Proud to be a Liberal. |

I'll let you know. The .50AE is a much smaller cartridge. 300 grain vs 440 in the magnum. The load some a lot heavier than that. I was looking at this a bit earlier. I saw 500gr commercially and ballistic reports for 700gr. That is up in the BMG category. It looks like you may pay $2 a round for commercial ammo but you can reload for 30 cents or so depending on what bullets you buy and how many you get in a box. The real price break at Natchez seems to be 500 for a 320gr and it goes up from there. 700 grain would be slow for sure - maybe even subsonic. 440 seems to be the most common. I may take up reloading when I retire. I should start saving brass now... |
