The governmental authorities are well aware that there are strong undercurrents of unrest and hostility towards the present system and they're doing everything they can to maintain the status quo. The pressure from the people will continue however. I remember going to school nights in 1978-79 and one of my professors spoke about this. He said that once the genie was out of the bottle in China (PRC) and the population became more aware of the concepts of capitalism, China would forever change due to internal pressures. Later, in 1986, I visited China, arranged by a host in New York. The purpose of the trip was to explore possible joint ventures as part of China's initial, exploratory program to team with western companies and to acquire certain technologies. Our plane was met at the airport in Shanghai by armed Chinese military or cops wearing hats with the red star on it. The rest of the men still wore Mao Tse-tung type jackets for the most part. Things have certainly changed since then. |
