![]() My outdoor digital thermometer is reading minus 3.6 degrees F. right now. Another blizzard forecast for later tonight and through Sunday with 50 mph winds and gusts to hurricane strength. Good news is additional snowfall forecast is for only 10-12+ inches which will sit on top of the 32 plus inches already on the ground. Then, another potential storm, more of a Nor'Easter, may come up the coast on Tuesday-Wednesday bringing additional snow. Good news is that if it develops you people in the middle Atlantic states may get to share in it a bit. Please take all the snow you want. :-) Miserable winter. |

I would...nothing too good for those beautiful animals. ;-) |

How do your large, four-legged horsie pets manage this crappy weather? They do fine. Horses have a weird metabolism that allows them to tolerate extreme cold with no ill affects. All they need is hay to process and the digestive process keeps them warm. My biggest problem right now is with Waste Management Corp. We are required by the town to have a dumpster for the temporary storage of horse manure and used stall bedding. Every two weeks Waste Management comes out and empties the dumpster. Our driveway(s) are such that normally the driver can drive up the main driveway, turn the truck around, picking up and dumping the dumpster in the process. With all the snow and piled up snow banks he can't make the swing to completely turn the truck around. He drives up to where the dumpster is and then backs down the driveway to the road. Then my wife gets a call saying they can't access the dumpster. They've done this twice now. So, I climbed aboard the tractor and spent a couple of hours moving snow banks and widening the driveways. All he has to do is *back* up the driveway and there is plenty of room for him to back into an area I cleared, pull straight to the dumpster, empty it, back up about 10 feet, turn and drive straight out to the road. If he can back out, he can back in. He came again yesterday, late in the afternoon and did the same thing he usually does. Drives straight in, realizes he can't turn completely around, backs out and they call us again. Assuming we don't get too badly clobbered with this storm tonight and tomorrow I am going to call the local Waste Management office again on Monday and tell them I'll meet the driver at the end of the driveway and *I'll* back the stupid truck up and empty the dumpster for him. Guess you can tell I am ****ed. I've driven and maneuvered rigs bigger than his truck in the past and I know it's not a problem. It's just "inconvenient" for him. ****es me off when you are paying almost $400 a month for the service and have been for over 14 years. |

Don't rub it in. This is funny though .... Apparently Facebook works. On a neighbor's post (who is also a horse person) I commented about Waste Management and the issues described (above). I first went and "liked" Waste Management's Facebook page so when I typed in their name in my post it creates a hyperlink to the WM Facebook page. It also sends WM a notice that they have been "mentioned" in the post. 35 minutes later I looked out the window and there was the WM truck doing exactly as I described. It emptied the dumpster with no problem. |

I was thinking...up here in the burbs, there used to be a farm that gave away the free fertilizer to urban folks who liked to garden or improve their lawns.

In many places you compost it for a while then put it in a "spreader" and dispose of it on fields or lawns as fertilizer. Not in my town. They are very strict about the management of this kind of thing. You can't just dump or spread it on your property ... anywhere. You have to hire a waste removal company to haul it away. In fact, the paddock area at our house has a required berm around the entire fence to prevent or limit run off from the paddock area. When we had the place in Florida I built a large, 3 sided bin and we'd dump the manure and bedding in it. About every two months or so a recycling company company would send out a truck and BobCat and haul it away for free. They processed it and sold it as fertilizer. |
