My favorite “mountain,” West Rock. From Wikipedia: West Rock of south-central Connecticut, with a high point of 700 feet (213 m), is a 7-mile (11 km) long trap rock mountain ridge located on the west side of New Haven. The ridge forms a continuous line of exposed cliffs visible from metropolitan New Haven and points west. West Rock Ridge is part of the narrow, linear Metacomet Ridge that extends from Long Island Sound near New Haven, north through the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts to the Vermont border. Lots of recreational opportunities on or near the “the Rock,” as we kids called it…sports fields at the base, lots of trails, a nature center, and Judges Cave: “In the 17th century, West Rock served as the hideout for Edward Whalley and his son-in-law, Gen. William Goffe, two of the three "regicide judges" whom New Haven honors by streets bearing their surnames (41.313094°N 72.932920°W). They had fled England, anticipating prosecution under King Charles II in the execution of his father Charles I, to New Haven; the rock shelter hideout used by the two is now called Judges Cave. The Regicides Trail is also named with this history in mind.” -- Proud to be a Liberal. |
