Time to winterized the boat..
Gonna be in the low 30's this week.
I didn't get to finish the 23' Marquis this year But the 18' Chris Craft was always ready. Got to take it out to Carlyle lake a dozen or so times this summer. Always a blast but time to put it away for the winter. Well it was fun while the weather held... |

It's strange to think that even here the summers seem so short and the winters so long...

In the mid 80's I grew a beard and told my wife I was gonna shave it off on January 1. I did. And the next weekend it got down to -23 with a 30 mi wind. Talk about a glass jaw. WOW!

Taking a warm coat to Chicago is just a trick. It fools you into thinking you can actually go outside. You are supposed to stand under the IR heaters outside the hotel, dive into a Checker and run inside when you get where you are going Years ago I flew into Chicago one January. Rental was running when I picked it up at the airport, so I drove to the hotel and parked it. Next morning I went out to start it, and it barely clicked. Was -30, and with windchill close to -60! Three days later the car finally cranked, it got up to 5 degrees and it actually felt pretty good outside. You nawthuners can have it. |

Coldest I have ever been in was -21*F twice. First time was January 1, 1968. I had a New Years Eve party at my house. After the party broke up I went outside and started up my car. It was my 1st car a 1959 Ford Galaxie with a manual transmission. I depressed the clutch and started the car. I let it warm up for a few minutes. It was in 1st gear. I finally started down the road. I went to shift into 2nd but the shifter would not budge. I drove about a mile in 1st gear before I could get it into 2nd and about another half mile or so I managed to get into 3rd gear. Once it warmed up it shifted fine.
The second time was in 1977. We had a place in Harrison Michigan about half way up the lower peninsula. The snow on the ground was knee deep and I decided to take a hike through the woods. With the deep snow I was actually starting to sweat from the effort to make it through the deep snow so before I got chilled I had to turn around and head back home. This past January we hit -16*F. It was the second coldest winter since record keeping began so says the National Weather Service. So much for global warming. |

I would have stayed at Mammoth if it was me. Traffic was horrible trying to get around the lake. We went in around the west side and out to the east and down through Carson City. Both sucked. Originally we were going out of Reno but a last minute call put in a side trip to LaJolla and out LAX. Long drive. Our friends cabin are on are west Side. 1/2 and 3/4 way down. So not as much traffic. We come in over highway 89 and us 50 most of the time. |

When I was growing up we had 22 oaks and several white pines, all tucked in on one half acre. Now we are down to two pines and 10 oaks. Unfortunately my dad bought the downhill side of the street so every inch of it is raking/blowing, up hill to the street. We do have pickup here in town, no bags, just put the piles on the side of the road. |

One of my neighbors gets out his Dixon zero turn and mows his lawn one last time. Only he mows circling backwards and while chopping themup, blows the leaves onto a pile then mows the pile munching them even more. Then repeats the process three or four times and it's over.
Leaves just sorta disappear. |

Scott, I really didn't know that the oak leaves were that acidic and that you had that great of a concentration of them. Around here it's mostly maples. But I agree with Greg. Mowing them turned the leaves to powder and the wind takes them away. Usually to be replaced by more leaves.
