She looks at his cabbie license and sees his name is Don. She asks

She responds, 'Well, let's see what we can do about that:

The cab driver is very excited and says,

summer excursion to the north east a few weeks back. Any questions
about that, I'd be glad to oblige.

With regard to harry, I don't know how long you have been in this
group. Trust me, he richly deserves everything he gets. I don't
believe I've ever encountered a more obnoxious, lying, hypocrite in my
life. If this were a moderated group he would have been **** canned

people who were at least notified to report for a physical. The lottery
system didn't start until late 1969.

A school deferment was pretty much automatic and could be extended if
you then enrolled in a graduate program although that ended in 1968.
The relative number of people enrolled in school from 1964 through 1972
very closely follows the draft numbers, peaking in 1968. After 1968 the
number drafted and the number enrolled in school quickly began to
decline. The last person drafted was at the end of 1972. The draft was
officially abolished in 1979.

during the 1960s. Most guys my age were not drafted. My student

I certainly wasn't going to go enlist at that point so I could go kill

So how many people who served in the military during that period did so
solely with the goal to "kill SE Asians"? Not many. The draft removed
any choice for many. For others it was a means of service to the country
which was considered an honorable thing to do. Many joined was a means
of getting job training and/or educational benefits. Others joined
simply for the adventure of something new.

Bottom line is ... it's a dirty job but someone has to do it. (with an

region is ungovernable without a dictatorship. Their culture has

majority of servicemen deployed to Vietnam were volunteers.

Of the nearly 16 million men not engaged in active military service, 57%
were exempted (typically because of jobs including other military
service), deferred (usually for educational reasons), or disqualified
(usually for physical and mental deficiencies but also for criminal
records including draft violations). Nearly 500,000 men were
disqualified for criminal records, but less than 10,000 of them were
convicted of draft violations. Finally, as many as 100,000 draft
eligible men fled the country.

Just because a person was not drafted does not mean that their life
was not altered by the war and threat of the draft. Lots of people
enlisted to get their choice of service branch or specialty, and
countless others joined the reserves or national guard if they were
lucky enough to get in. Usually by the time you had to report for a
physical it was too late for the other options.

My draft notice was sent to the wrong address. Gave me time to get in the
Air Force instead of army draftee.

Sadly, I have come around to the point of view that much of that
region is ungovernable without a dictatorship. Their culture has
none of the underpinning history and infrastructure required to make
democracy work.

Same reason most of Africa is a disaster. Tribal mentality. Fight with
other tribes, and do what the chief says. Vote for who the chief says.
