Bill, an HMR is pretty good but kind of an "overkill" for small edible game like squirrels and rabbit. I prefer to use my winchester model 74 with a 4x Weaver scope. It's chambered for .22 short only which is pretty quiet in the woods. Less racket than a .22 LR

As a kid, that's all I ever hunted with. Couldn't afford the LR.

I'm talking 55 years ago!

Now that I can afford it, I can't find .22 anywhere. Don't need it
though.

Opened a drawer where I keep extra gun cleaning stuff the other day, and
there is a partial brick of .22lf. Price tag says $13.95! Guess I have
had it awhile.

You mean, you can't find it at walmart. There's plenty of .22LR ammo
around, even decent ammo at 5 cents or less a round. In the last week, I
bought 500 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain at 8 cents a round. A few
minutes ago, Cabelas had Mini-Mags at 9 cents a round. Academy had
Federal Champion 40 grain at less than 5 cents a round.

Perhaps you should concentrate on fewer hobbies at one time. Probably
shouldn't be firearms or anything else that requires decent eyesight.
