We saw one of those flying over the Indian River in Florida yesterday,
not too far from Titusville and the Space Center. It looked very cool
but unfortunately I have a neighbor with permanent injuries from
landing an ultra light aircraft in a tree last year.

A guy on the lake here had one a few years ago. I stopped and talked to him about it once and watched him take off and land a few times. A couple of years ago he was moving away so he and his daughter were taking a farewell flight around the lake. Something happened and they went down over land. Both died.

Ultralights and gyrocopters are the motorcycles of aviation.

Anyone who flies one will get hurt sooner or later ... but I still

want one ;-)



Part of the problem is people stop taking the dangers seriously and

make a silly mistake.

Agreed. I'd fly one of those amphi-planes, but I'd stay over water. They glide really well, so if the engine quits you have time to line up and put it back down. Then call Sea Tow. :-)

The ones the guys fly around here could lose power completely and still
land if you could find a spot. They are basically big parachutes with a
big fan on the back..
