New Study: Internet Trolls Are Often Machiavellian Sadists
From "Mother Jones", interesting read about people we know:
http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2014/02/internet-trolls-sadists-psychopaths-lulz?google_editors_picks=true ------------ In the past few years, the science of Internet trollology has made some strides. Last year, for instance, we learned that by hurling insults and inciting discord in online comment sections, so-called Internet "trolls" (who are frequently anonymous) have a polarizing effect on audiences, leading to politicization, rather than deeper understanding of scientific topics. That's bad, but it's nothing compared with what a new psychology paper has to say about the personalities of so-called trolls themselves. The research, conducted by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba and two colleagues, sought to directly investigate whether people who engage in trolling are characterized by personality traits that fall in the so-called "Dark Tetrad": Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others). It is hard to underplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. What's more, it also found a relationship between all Dark Tetrad traits (except for narcissism) and the overall time that an individual spent, per day, commenting on the Internet. In the study, trolls were identified in a variety of ways. One was by simply asking survey participants what they "enjoyed doing most" when on online comment sites, offering five options: "debating issues that are important to you," "chatting with others," "making new friends," "trolling others," and "other." --------- |

But since I turned over a new leaf, I won't call you that. :) FOAD, let's be a bit honest here. You and I both know that your insults continue as before, you've simply toned down the language a bit and have become somewhat more indirect. What did you think of Waynes post about the "Dark Tetrad"? Wasn't that interesting? I've mostly left the nasty comments about other posters here to the right-wing snarkasses. I don't read Wayne's droppings, and if he is second-handed to me via a quote in someone else's post, I tend to passover his comments. Therefore, I do not know and do not care about Dark Tetrads, whatever or whoever they are. Opinions aren't always driven by politics, Krause. You are just ****ed off because the VW plant voted against unionization. Get used to it. |

But relax. The years just starting! === I'm feeling kind of homeless in rec.boats this year since I try to avoid political trolls, and I don't own a motorcycle or an Apple computer. Please don't take my blanket. I do have a couple of WinXP laptops that I use for navigation on the boat. They work fine although some web sites have become a bit finicky since the latest browsers are unsupported. The center of gravity on my folding electric bike is just too high to experiment with counter steering, however the YouTube videos explaining the gyroscopic effects were interesting. Trying to develop an intuitive feel for gyro precession is an interesting mind exercise. Last but not least it's always sadly interesting to watch the ongoing disintegration of Harry's mental state and his trips up "De Nile". "De Nile"? HA! I always loved this song, by Mel Tillis' daughter, Pam... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iep50VXLVE Poor Wayne. He's reduced himself to a more educated version of "Slammer the Insulter" . So, Tim, do you still think your good buddy Wayne qualifies for your statement of "odd, I haven't seen Wayne start but a couple threads this year and they weren't designed to get people stirred up over nothing." Of course, he isn't going to get me stirred up, but he's trying. That's why he's down in the dumpster with Slammer and a few other juveniles. So Harry, are you saying you don't stir anything at all in here, good buddy?? Did I say that? No. What I said was that Wayne has with his daily personal insults reduced himself to a more educated version of Slammer. That's why I shoved him into the dumpster. I for the most part have refrained since the beginning of the year from personally insulting other posters here. Wayne has not, Hank has not, Slammer has not, and a couple of others have not. A true professional would have written: "I, for the most part, have...". You chose to not highlight the "for the most part" point in your post. It's obvious why you took that path. His punctuation is horrible, doncha think? |

I don't pay much attention to my own spelling or grammar here since after all it is just rec.boats. I pay even less attention to spelling or grammar here when I post with my cell phone. Francis Bacon, the lesser known brother of the fellow who invented the popular breakfast meat (ha!), used the phrase exactly as I did, sans commas, in his Novum Organum. Bacon was a tad more formally edu-ma-cated in his native language than your two right-wing buddies here. |
