AOL is starting to get cranky with me because I still use AOL 7.0

They can't make me watch their ads on 7.

I like Thunderbird. I had used it years ago on other computers.
I've tried different versions of Agent but never liked them much.
Thunderbird works just fine for both email and newsgroups and made John
happy because it conforms to newsgroup protocol in terms of how it
handles signatures. :-)




Another comment regarding Usenet. I realize things change but it's
really regrettable that newsgroups became available via web based forums
like "Goggle Groups" and others. When that started the whole culture of
usenet began to change resulting in people like the clown in Canada (the
"other" Scott) having easy access to newsgroups. There were always
debates and disagreements but they had a different flavor than now. I'd
love to see web based access to newsgroups disappear. For those who
still want access, there are free newsgroup servers and free readers
(like Agent and Thunderbird) available. I happen to subscribe to
Giganews as a server for $4 a month and it's well worth it to get a few
chuckles here every other day.

have read where you can subscribe to Giganews for about $29 a year.


I don't know about $29 a year. My subscription used to be about $12
per month for some ungodly amount of downloads that I never came close
to using. I changed it to the cheapest subscription which is about $4 a
month. I did this a couple of months ago and remember reviewing all
the subscription options. I don't remember seeing one for $29 for a
year. Maybe it's an introductory plan to get new subscribers.

I'll say this for Giganews. I can't remember the last time it's server
was off-line.

They just don't seem to be making much old music anymore and I have
all they made ;-) (27 gig or so)



I used to get tunes that way also but found a much easier and faster
way. I have Audacity installed in all three computers. Set the input
to "stereo high def mix" in preferences so the computer's mic is turned
off. Then, just find a quality YouTube video or .mp3 of a song you
want. Start record in Audacity, check levels, and record it. When
finished, do any noise removal, editing or enhancements you want and
export it as an .mp3.

I get a lot of backing tracks this way to practice guitar with. In
Audacity you can change the pitch the song is in without changing the
tempo and visa-versa, so it's possible to put the song in virtually any
key you like to play in.


You might consider getting the online Sirius, just for listening. It runs $4 a month. My wife has a
lifetime, as you do, but she paid about $150. I don't think they offer a lifetime subscription any
more.



The lifetime thing may have been $150 for me also. It was a long time
ago and I don't really remember.

I don't really listen to music much anymore as a general background
activity. Comcast has all the music channels that my wife has playing
often in the house. We have a distribution amplifier and ceiling
speakers in just about every room in the house. Drives me nuts
sometimes. I use Pandora occasionally but most of the time that I
listen to music it's for a specific reason, like trying to learn to play
the song or editing and mixing someone else's recordings.

One thing I remember about Sirius was that they played the same songs at
just about the same time everyday.

Never noticed that. But I don't listen to it much, and when traveling it's normally set to Bluegrass
Junction, which has some Bluegrass announcers and various groups being highlighted. Don't think I've
ever heard the same program twice.

Yes they do. We had it on the big boat for awhile but got rid of it
mostly for that reason.

Hmmm. You are using the same version of Thunderbird (24.3.0) that I am
using. I don't get a prompt to confirm a delete or warning of no trash
folder.

Someone else mentioned the prompt to confirm delete as well. I must
have missed it somewhere in the setup. I'll go look some more.

I could have. Probably did. Don't remember. I wonder if there's a way
to change my mind. Not a big deal. I am getting out of the habit of
hovering the cursor over the "delete" button. That will help.

I don't think deleted messages from a newsgroup go into any kind of
"trash" folder, mainly because there isn't one and no apparent way to
create on. You can have a trash folder in the email and "Local
Folders" accounts, but not in the newsgroup account. I suspect they go
into a "temp" file somewhere that has some maximum space before they are
deleted, last in, last out.
