Growing up here in MA it was almost always used to refer to a soft drink like Coke or Pepsi but it's use seems to be fading with younger generations. If I asked a 14 year old or even a 20 year old if they wanted "tonic" they wouldn't know what I was talking about. "Soda" or "Pop" hasn't caught on though as used in most parts of the country. The soft drinks up here are now referred to by name, i.e. "I'll have a Pepsi" or "Coke" or whatever. |
