Old beetles had that carbon monoxide heater, right off the exhaust

driving a ways.

How well do I remember. I was raised in a '64 bug...

Our first car in Germany as an underpaid 2LT was a 1959 Karmann Ghia - my cheap Porsche. Fun car for
whipping around German roads, although not a speed demon on the autobahn. Whenever I had to pick up
a soldier who had a little too much to drink, got wild, and was in a German jail, I'd make him ride
in the back seat of that KG - all the way back to the barracks. Word got around. My back seat was
not a place to ride!

When I was in HS my girlfriends older sister had one.. We rode in the
back of that thing all over the place, but it wasn't punishment:)

One of my troops was a bucket loader operator, SPC 4 (same rank as a corporal). He was a great
soldier and bucket loader operator, and I wanted to make him aSPC5, same as a buck sergeant. He
wouldn't let me promote him. He loved his bucket loader job.

This guy was much bigger than me. Probably about Tim's size. Big. I got a call one night that he was
in a German jail down close to Heilbronn, about 100 miles away. Since it was so late, I grabbed his
squad leader out of bed and made him go with me to keep me awake. When we got the guy, I put him in
the back - after some arguing. He had a choice - get in the back or go back to the German jail and
face the German judge the next day. He road in back. Lucky for him he passed out after about 20
miles, but he had one hell of a time getting himself out of the back when we got back to the
barracks.

That must have gotten crowded after a while. :)

When I worked at Cornell University back in the late 60s, one of my
friends and colleagues had put himself through University of Rochester
(a very cold town) by living in a VW beetle for a while. He knew
everything there was to know about VW heaters and the lack thereof.

Old beetles never die. There were a couple guys here using them for
work when I got here in 84. They had taken out the back seats and set
it up as a parts bin.
They were making a lot of money on the car allowance.
One of these guys had a barn full of VWs and enough parts to make some
from scratch. They finally sold of the whole lot to another collector
and moved on to other interests.

I had a 58 pan that I shortened 14" and made a dune buggy out of. I
ended up rebuilding the engine (fairly trivial) and the T/A (tougher).
I still have the 36mm socket and 4' breaker bar you need to get the
big nuts off. (spindles, swing axle and flywheel). I ended up getting
a 36" pipe wrench to get the exhaust apart.

All together I have owned three... My very first car was a new 1974.
There was a car dealer that lived across the street and we got it from
him for 2 grand after he repossed it with maybe two to three months and
a thousand miles (1200 comes to mind, but it was 40 years ago:) on it. I
actually owned that car three times, sold and bought it back from one
guy twice, long story.. It was the one with the Lime green paint, black
trim, and came with a huge fake black box and key on the back so you
could drive down the road looking like a wind up toy. I have never been
able to find any info on that addition on the net looking, I am
wondering if it was some kind of dealer prop that Russ (our friend)
threw in with the sale...

I also owned a 61 beetle and a 64, both were as adventurous and
ordinalry as most of your beetle experiences so I won't go into too much
detail. Did have one with no brakes, that was fun...:)

My beetle was a Manx dune buggy I bought. Cheap. Had a bad mounting horn
I had to weld for the engine transaxle.
