Y'all southern boys sure are amusing.
I was out driving the wife to her dental appointment today with a heavy snowstorm in effect and 6 inches already on the ground.
Only problem was a few people driving too fast and what looked like a foreign student slamming his new sporty Range Rover SUV into a curb angle breaking the axle. They were loading it on a flatbed when we passed on our way back home.

I think local or state government can "request" that businesses close or
release early but they can't force it without declaring a state of
emergency. Last time I can recall businesses being forced to close up
here was in the blizzard of '78 when Michael Dukakis (then governor)
declared a state of emergency and banned any civilian auto travel for
almost a week.

My brother in law deferred his trip back to Indiana when he saw the
weather forecast. Atlanta traffic sucks in a sunny summer day.

I am not sure why he goes back at all, at least until Spring.
I think that is the second week of June in Kokomo.

Don't know why many people don't take it seriously. especially in the
south, where they're not equipped to handle smow/ice.
Doesn't happen often, but it's always a disaster.
If public officials had the guts to issue a warning off the roads, most
businesses would comply. Schools is a no-brainer.
It's not uncommon to do so up north.
Hell, even the weather folks will do it often enough.

I use to teach a week-long class on newsletter writing and production at
UND in the late summer. Did that for a number of years. Beautiful
campus, lousy town, and most of the rest of the state...aside from the
northern bit of shore along Lake Michigan...was...awful. Especially in

Holy crap! That's because they all work there and it effects them
directly and you know how reporters are... Either way, they are ripping
him hard but there are folks living in stores and schools waiting to get
home...

What the hell was he supposed to do? There was no excuse for the way the CNN gal was ripping into
him. She was playing at being Dick Gregory, making herself the news.

Cite that report please.

The mayor handled it well. She, not so much. Is that how CNN typically
handles interviews?

You should see how they treat Republicans! Of course, they don't have many Republicans on CNN -
wouldn't want any 'truth' to get out, you know.

Yeah, they were just going nuts on the guy... Like I said, as if a
Republican had forgotten his wifes, fathers, best friends birthday, or
spilled some milk.. it was harsh...

Should have told people to stay home.
Don't have the guts to "interrupt" business and school.
It happens. The smart ones stayed home.

I came up from Florida as soon as the roads opened and tured right back
around on my return trip.. The think I remember the most was on the way
up the Nat Guard was using huge loaders to lift and deposit stranded
cars on side of the highway into the snow banks to clear the roads. On
the way back down a couple days later, all those cars were laying there,
upsidedown, stripped, and burned....

So she was out there in traffic?
Sounds to me like she was browbeating the mayor for her own stupidity...

I was in Atlanta about 25 years ago when they had a snow storm. The roads were littered with
cars and trucks off the road and in the ditches. Those that hadn't already wrecked were
losing traction or about to and would soon join the rest off the road.

In the 80's my sister lived in Norfolk, Virginia. They had a snow storm resulting in 6
incheds of snow all over the city. They city was paralyzed because they forgot where they had
put the snow plow. Yes, the City of Norfolk had one snow plow and they couldn't find it to
hook it up to a truck to start plowing the roads.

Yup, CNN had told it's employees to go home, which is what she was berating the mayor for.

The reality is, this isn't the snow that is causing the problem, it is
a quarter inch of ice under the snow. 5 or 6 inches of snow would
actually help because your tires would have something to bite.

This was also a common situation in DC, Rain changing to a dusting of
snow after dark with ice under it. They do "a little" better than
Atlanta.

I prefer a place where water doesn't freeze unless you want it to and
refrigerate it.

In my youth, I went to Ohio for a years training with NCR. New 1964 Impala
SS and was getting what I thought was snow in Missouri. Was sleet, and by
the time I reached St. Louis, there was a 1/4 inch of ice under 6 inches of
snow. Was scary. Could not believe how many cars stuck in the center
divider ditch. I kept to about 25 mph and still spun out twice. Once on an
ice bridge when the wheels started to spin and I slowed down and engine
died as I did not put in the clutch. And once ran off the road, as I lost
where the edge was.

Yup. School folks, government folks, business folks, TV 'journalists', and probably some
tourists...all stupid. Should have stayed home.

Yup. Every time they get snow or ice down south it's a "disaster."
They were warned by the weatherman.
Shut 'er down.
And if "they" don't, take personal responsibity for yourself.
Or wait in traffic for +24 hours.

The problem here and probably there is all those people with 4 wheel drive.
Years ago, they rarely closed Donner Pass during snow storms. People ran
chains and the speed limit was / is 25 mph when chain controls are in
effect. But with all those 4x4 mini pickups, the idiots would drive 70 mph
and cause huge wrecks. So now the CHP will run caravans at slow speed, or
close the highway if not enough cops to caravan.

When I was a kid there was a hill near my house that just filled up with
cars during snow storms. Folks got as far up as they could, parked them
and walked home, picked them up in the morning...

Anyway, funny to watch CNN bitching cause the (republican) Governor
won't grant them an interview... LOL... wonder why:)
