Scalia Calls “Duck Dynasty” Decision Unconstitutional

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia lashed out at the
cable network A&E today, calling its decision to suspend Phil Robertson,
the star of the TV series “Duck Dynasty,” unconstitutional, and
demanding that it be overturned at once.

Speaking at a press conference with fellow Justice Clarence Thomas, a
visibly angry Scalia told reporters that Robertson was “exercising his
First Amendment right to express an opinion—an opinion, I might add,
that many other great Americans agree with.”

He warned that the suspension of the “Duck” star would have a “chilling
effect” on freedom of speech in America: “If Phil Robertson can be
muzzled for expressing this perfectly legitimate view, what’s to prevent
the same thing from happening to, say, a Justice of the Supreme Court?”

He added that, while he was a huge “Duck Dynasty” fan who never misses
an episode, his objection to Mr. Robertson’s suspension was “purely on
Constitutional grounds.”

Declaring that A&E’s decision “will not stand,” Justice Scalia said he
would ask the Supreme Court to meet in an emergency session to overturn
it: “This offensive decision by A&E is a clear violation of the
Constitution, and I’m not the only one on the Court who feels that way.
Right, Clarence?”

Justice Thomas had no comment.

And that's a damn shame.

I know, Borowitz ... but the duck guy has as much right to speak his
mind as Begala or Bill Maher

This guy is a goober who makes duck calls, not a sociologist.

Nobody who is offended ever watched his show in the first place. I
found it unwatchable myself but I don't watch any of these reality
shows.

In the end I doubt A&E is going to walk away from a $150 million a
year show. I bet they are still shooting and they will be back. They
are just calling it a hiatus. If A&E doesn't want it, someone will
pick it up.

Seems like a natural for Fox, the News Network of Hate.

The thing you keep ignoring is close to half of the country agrees
with him virtually every time they poll the question.
... but Fox news kicks every one else's ass in the Nielsens too.

This guy said something in an obscure interview that nobody read and
he is on a TV show that nobody who would be offended will ever watch
so this looks like a media generated story.

My guess, they start the show up in a few weeks and the ratings are
better than ever.
That is what A&E really cares about.

Publicly expressing hatred towards gays and making moronic comments
about blacks, as Mr. Duck has done, appeals mostly to an aging white man
audience, which is being less and less relevant. That Fox is a leader in
ratings seems to be bringing diminishing returns to the GOP in its
attempts to elect a president, although with Republican governors and
state legislatures working full speed ahead to disenfranchise groups of
voters that don't buy into the utter nonsense it is selling, you never
know. I have hope the GOP will nominate a "real conservative" tea bagger
in 2016 and lose yet again.

Did you actually see what he said or are you just reacting to the
outrage?

I've seen the whole texts of what he said in regard to gays and to
blacks, whom he apparently thinks were better off and "happier" decades
ago. Whatever his actual genetic origins, Mr. Duck comes across as the
product of generations of first cousins marrying each other. The network
was entitled to ****can him, if only temporarily. Some of your fellow
righties think Mr. Duck's "First Amendment Rights" were violated, which
is funny on its face.

Harry is going with the Rahm playbook.

What is funny on the face is being shocked when someone who was hired
to be an unreconstructed redneck, gets fired for being an
unreconstructed redneck.

I've known a few rednecks in my day. None of the ones I knew were as
racist and homophobic as that inbred asshole on the Duck show seems to be.

I doubt you know any real rednecks then.

education.

That's a step or two up from Harry's non nondescript degree in English.

Yeah, he has a bachelor's degree in phys ed, the typical degree of a
college jock of his day, and a night school master's in education. So
obviously he is a great intellect.

So, what you are saying is that Robertson is only playing at being a
racist, homophobic, inbred asshole. Right.
