He said he spent some time in 'Nam identifying dead bodies but my impression is that it wasn't something he did as a service to his country or even his fellow man. I have the impression he did it because the pay was good. I think he has said he was originally sent as a journalist but the job was cancelled or something by the time he arrived. |

No, I was not sent as a journalist. I had written a number of newspaper and magazine feature stories on farming and ranching while I was in the Kansas City area. They were noticed by some of the "locals" of the USDA and I was recruited by that agency to work on a "pacification" program in Vietnam that involved exporting U.S. farming technical knowledge to local farmers in that country. The bucks were not that attractive but the assignment was. So, I was trained and was flown to Saigon for a short training session before going out in the field. About the same time my training was completed, I got word that the program for which I had trained had been cancelled. I was offered a choice of being shipped home or being seconded to the DIA for "another" assignment. I chose the latter. The bucks there were not attractive, either. -- Religion: together we can find the cure. |
